Maybe a positive, honorable and transparent recall that is based on Sam Adams willfully lying to get elected, orchestrating an elaborate cover-up and abusing his power... is a good thing.

With your help we will make our government better,

I've been researching this morning, and have been unable to find anything which explains just who Wurster voted for originally. I suppose it doesn't matter, but it could call into question the over-all intent and motives of Wurster's recall effort. Especially in light of comments made in The Portland Tribune, Feb 19, 2009, where Wurster referred to homosexuality as a "lifestyle choice". Wurster says, "We educate individuals who bring up lifestyle choices that our core issues are traits of bad politicians and have nothing to do with sexual orientation. We also see the recall as an opportunity to bring those who are opposed on lifestyle choices together to focus on the common goal of creating a better government."

Mr. Wurster, if you don't understand an issue such as homosexuality, then you most certainly don't need to educate anyone on the subject, positively or negatively. Poorly chosen words have a powerful impact, no matter the intent. Please, do us a favor and DO NOT attempt to "educate" anyone on homosexuality.

Jason E.,

In case YOU don't understand, let me ask you about bisexuals...many bisexuals end up in monogamous relationships with same or different gendered people, and that is ALWAYS a choice.

Or don't bisexuals count? Do just gay guys and lesbians count? How about the gay guys that father children before they decided to live an authentic life that reflects their true natures? Isn't there a CHOICE involved there?

Transexuals, they choose to use modern medical science to alter their sexual characterisitics.
THAT is a choice.

The GLBT community does have choices, and your references to the biology involved in
homosexuality strikes me as really more of the abuse of the gay card.

No worries, Adams will be recalled, as sure as the day is long and the night is dark, and Portland is our beloved home.

gonetorio,

I'd suggest that you look deeper into your own arguments. We don't choose who we fall in love with. We don't just wake up one morning and say, "oh, look, I'd rather have a penis than a vagina." The feelings and cravings, the inner knowing - and often the deep confusion and depression that springs forth as a result - are not chosen. Any "choices" made, especially with regard to medical modifications for transgender folks, cannot be simplified down to the level of picking out a sweater or a polo shirt. Those decisions to change physiology are a reflection of who the person is on the inside, an expression of self-identity and not of simple choice.

That's all I will say to you on this issue, because you also obviously feel that GLBTQ (don't forget queer identifying folks) people chose a lifestyle. Many in our community grew up in oppressive circumstances and have deep emotional conflicts to resolve before they can truly believe in themselves. Whether this is your battle or not, it is not for me to say. I just hope you will not add your voice to those who wish to "educate", as Jasun Wurster wishes to do.

Why is Wurster doing this?

A paycheck.

I do not feel that GLBT people choose their biology, but SOME GLBT folks CAN choose :whether: and :how: to express their sexuality, which is essentially choosing a lifestyle, where lifestyle implies an outward form of living, and may have very little to do with a person's internal sexual landscape.

Biology is not destiny, and not everyone is conflicted about minority sexual status.

But I agree, lifestyle is a bad choice of words, and knowing Jasun, it will never be uttered again. Orientation is much better, although it excludes ambisexuals, who do not discriminate in their sexual attractions. They are the rarest breed and there is no term I can think of that would include them, except if you consider a non-orientation a form of orientation.

When we collect signatures, the whole operation will be completely cut and dried, if the person does not reach their hand out for the pen to sign, just as soon as the signature gatherer introduces themselves, the encounter will end, politely and very quickly. Education will not have ANY role.

I suggest we don't talk about sexual orientation at all. I suggest that we talk about the fact that our mayor has no credibility, has demonstrated less-than-zero leadership in the last six months, and is clearly a train wreck on and off the job.

Hi Alexjon,

I am a volunteer just like everyone else on this campaign and am not getting paid. More so, I am living off of my savings and have reduced my hours at my paying job so that I can focus on the Recall.

My reasons for this is to provide the people of Portland the opportunity to hold Sam Adams accountable for his deliberate actions which have diminished his public trust and political capital to effectively represent the city. The citizens have a right to recall Sam Adams in a positive, open and transparent campaign.

I believe our government is better with increased public participation which sends a message to our leaders that we demand them to be honest with us.

In my first interview with Just Out I stated that I voted for Kyle Burris:

More so, this campaign will strive to educate those who view this as an opportunity to educate those who cast hate against the LGBT community that:

"Every citizen has the right to the pursuit of happiness, and it is the job of government to protect individual liberties. Deliberately lying, masterminding cover-ups, and abusing power are traits of a corrupt politician and has nothing to do with sexual orientation."
