Major political error by police commissioner Dan Saltzman in opening play of upcoming police union contract negotiations. Union president was able to make several points, A1 above the fold:

1) Police Commissioner Saltzman was unfamiliar with disciplinary procedure of the police department,

2) Police Commissioner Saltzman was unfamiliar with the agreements of the police union contract,

3) Police Commissioner Saltzman was poorly advised by his staff about the merits and timing of his decision,

4) Police Commissioner Saltzman is willing to flip flop on police brutality issues to appease the public,

5) Police Commissioner Saltzman drew other city commissioners into the fracas with letters of support making them all look equally idiotic

Saltzman's mistakes galvanized the police ethos of all against one resulting in a stand-off which he lost in every respect.

That's some bullshit quoting right there. You want to be a "doer of deeds" go fucking invade Cuba, out ride your horse, negotiate peace between two nations, drink ten pots of coffee a day and then found the national parks service.

Then you can pull some god damn Teddy Roosevelt quotes out of your hat (make sure it is a big goddamn hat).
3
Also, I feel slightly ridiculous for having to point this out, but the Big Stick in Big Stick diplomacy? It is not an actual stick.
4
Dude, an out-of-control cop beating on citizenry is EXACTLY like Teddy Roosevelt. I can't believe the comparison hasn't struck me before now.
5
"Safety not Politics" while holding no confidence votes? Crazyland we live in, apparently.
6
Hey Blabby

How many protesters heads do you have framed on your wall?
Scott Westerman appears to be an exceptional community organizer. But only in his own police community. There is no question Portland Police Bureau officers have separated themselves from the greater community by choice.
7
Portland has a low violent crime rate because most of our violent criminals are cops. If those cops were removed from the force, our crime rate will go up. Keep sociopaths where they belong, on the force.
8
No way Blabby. Teddy might beat a guy to death, but he'd have done it to save a baby or an adorable bear cub or something. Force for the sake of force was not that guy's MO. It was force for the sake of babies.
9
"Force for the Sake of Babies" That should maybe be the PDs new motto.

(I'm guessing that Teddy scared the crap out of babies. All big teeth, and yelling, and "Bully!" and so on....)

But don't get lost - these actions, photo ops and words are all manufactured by Gallatin Public Affairs, hired by the PPA on about 9/30 to prep for the PPB / PPA union negotiations.

All manufactured.

So who released the video of Humphreys to the media - giving Gallatin / PPA an opportunity to go ballastic?

I think this link can clear up many misconceptions about Teddy Roosevelt: http://library.thinkquest.org/TQ0310720/Ro…

"I am Chris Humphreys, psychopathic murderer."
13
Pfffffffffffffffffffffffffft
14
Teddy Roosevelt was the civil service commissioner in New York City and then the Police Commissioner for a year. He was a progressive voice for reform of a very corrupt police force. If Teddy Roosevelt was around right now, he would be cracking heads. The heads he would crack would be cops that beat up children and then whine to their union bosses for protection when someone says they had been a bad boy.

A man walks into a trial where dozens of police officers are on trial for Identity Theft. The man gets sworn in and takes the stand. He tells how he saw dozens of police officers wearing shirts that said "I am Chris Humphreys."

"How did you know they weren't actually all Chris Humphreys?" asks the prosecutor. "That's easy," the man said, "there wasn't a single dead mentally ill man or bleeding child in sight."

16
"He was the first president to own and do many things."

Teddy rulz.

Its sad the level of ignorance and cop hating I see on this site. The Rap Sheet looks thoughtful and well written like it usually is. None of you English major computer geeks will ever understand the ideals, stressors or dangers of police work. You're just a bunch of posers who think if you diss police and make a bunch of stupid assertions others will think you're cool.

The following quote provides ample evidence of the manner of tragic ignorance that many in the public have for the complex requirements and courage that police work entails. It illustrates the kind of condescension and hatred that police have been contending with since the turn of the century.

"There is no question Portland Police Bureau officers have separated themselves from the greater community by choice".

Police do NOT separate themselves from the 'greater community' by choice. They are vilified, and no matter what they do, they're damned if they do and damned if they don't.

The ONLY way the general public will EVER grow enough sense to appreciate the difficulty and dangers of police work or a public that does not have police would be if they all decided to leave the force. Go on a week long strike or something. Then the public and all these stupid, ignorant Oregonian journalists would be CRYING for police protection.

Somebody's gotta have a whipping boy. Let it be police. Still, it does not change the fact that you people are ignorant and uninformed. Period.

What do we, as a community who employs such arrogant, mean spirited thugs, do with comments openly published, live this?

It is eye opening and informative to read the deflections and excuses - and absence of accountability these officers try and project, but what does the COMMUNITY do when faced with such a twisted police ranks - who is so emboldened as to protest and print up shirts and totally sit in support of murderers in their ranks, as if that is the action they are ONLY supposed to be taking?

Where ARE the ethical members of the police force, the ones who signed a contract to work FOR US, who agree to the terms of those contracts, including the STRICT ADHERENCE to all of the laws they are sworn ton uphold - including to not kill another - deliberately - as Nice and Friend, chose to.

Where are they?

I know where to begin - personally - holding up my opinion, as MY RIGHT - as a private citiizen to better knowingly CALL out these police ranks as being wrong. Time's up as tolerating our police when they wrongfully act - any of them. TIME'S UP.

No tee shirt printed up - or baby stroller brought out in support, will EVER excuse it away. Ever.

So, firing a beanbag round at a less than petite and physically resistant person makes this "a savage cop beating" and Humphries a "murderer"? Really? I agree with Tessie, many of you are fucking clueless. Was it the best course of action....I would say no, but most of you are clearly clueless about some of the things that could have happened. Why are you referencing the Chasse case, which is another situation all together and was clearly excessive force resulting in death?

Please wait...
