I don't think I've ever seen so much bullshit speculation over a fucking boxcutter. Or Exacto knife. Or utility knife.

Damn it!! PPB, just show everyone this stupid knife so we can get beyond this pedantic BS.
2
Personally, I don't understand all the discussion about it, or why we need it to be shown to us.

Maybe it's because I know what a box cutter is. I also know two people who have been cut with them out of aggression, and they are quite effective weapons.

I agree with Blabby. What's the difference? You can @!#*! someone up with a box cutter pretty darn quickly.

Does anyone who posts here own a Tazer? Can the Mercury get one? Let's set it up! Give the Tazer to PDX Oddball, give me a red marker to simulate a boxknife, mark off 6 feet or whatever, and see what happens. I'll sign a waiver if he will.

as I've said elsewhere, I think it's a BOX-CUTTER and as stupid as the City/PPB/PPA, et al are, they're just loathed to come out and say that word right now for it's very "loaded word" and the last set of goofy officials that used it came to ruin as a result when their Big Lie unraveled and they became the most hated set of people in the world. Here, though maybe not altogether as bright and canny a group as BushCo, they none-the-less recognize it's not the PC word to be ban-dashing around with too much ease.

So, they opt to do what?...STONEWALL on telling us exactly what it was? Why? It could be that there never was such a "knife" or the one they have is so childishly small that the whole city of Portland will erupt into laughter and giggling once they show it!
5
Yeah, just a little box cutter, can't hurt nobody ... yeah, he was covered with blood, but who isn't? ... yeah, so he threatened to kill other people in the area, but don't we all? ... yeah, so he refused to put the little box cutter down and kept moving toward the cop, who was telling him to put the box cutter down ... so what? Why they have to go and shoot the innocent man?!!!

Who wants to volunteer to be cut up by a box cutter?

Gimme a fuckin break.
6
It's been way too long since I've erupted into giggling, though.
7
The flight crews of the three planes on 9-1-1 were murdered with box cutters.
8
Dear Robert Collins:

No they weren't. That was a "simple story" con- cocted for simpletons to hone in on so they'd then filter out all the other imponderable events of that day that begged a far more complex explanations.

Think about it...don't just take what "authority figures" tell you as if it's Pablum. Use reason 'n' logic to deconstruct what you were told and see
if it fits back together the same as you're told.
9
I thought they were murdered by planes crashing into buildings.

I think Crocodile Dundee said it best: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01NHcTM5IA4

Not to channel Dwight Schrute or anything, but you'd really have to work hard at causing a fatal injury with a boxcutter, like take out a major artery in the neck or femoral artery, etc...
Not an easy thing to do, as people are pretty good at defending their tender vitals, weapon or no.
But the fact that other city's police have been able to subdue whackjobs with swords and even guns without shooting anyone fatally says a lot about Portland Police.
12
@Rich23 - Who said anything about a fatal injury? Why should a cop have to endure a cut from a box cutter on his hand? Or his forearm? Or his face? That ain't his job, and he's justified in using his firearm to stop anyone trying.
13
Agreed, Reymont. I'd like to see some of these posters try to disarm anyone with a box cutter. Sure, if you are in a life or death situation, like the passengers in the one airplane, you could probably succeed, but you will get cut. That is better than dying without a fight, tho.
14
why bother to give them less lethal weapons then? They shoot people who they should be using less-lethal weapons on and then innapropriately use less lethal weapons as punishment or in passive resisitance and all kinds of other fucked up situations. Basically, we've given them less lethal weapons to use whenever they don't feel like justifying shooting someone and still want to let them shoot people whenever they want?!?!?!

Actually, I think if cops are going to continue to claim that their jobs are dangerous, then it IS their job to get cut by a boxknife. Because right now they get away with murder, high pay, abuse and generally disgusting displays of authority by claiming that their jobs are more dangerous than other people's. So, either expect some danger or give up the gun. Ujfoyt and others who want to "see some of these posters try to disarm anyone with a box cutter"... There are people in Portland who work as social workers and with all kinds of people who can be scary sometimes. And they don't shoot them. BECAUSE THEY DONT GET GUNS!
15
@elicantdie: Do you personally know any social worker who has ever dis-armed a person armed with a box-cutter? If you do, could you get them to tell of their experience on Blogtown? I don't think a social worker would ever be faced with someone in a situation like this. The more I read about Jackie, and his past life, the more convinced I am that he wanted to die, so he chose suicide by cop. Read about his so called confession about molesting a girl. That was apparently weighing on his mind, and along with his deteriorating mental and physical health, I think he just finally decided to end it all. It is tragic that this sort of thing happens, but you (society) simply isn't equipped to handle and take care of the numbers of people in this situation in life. It is truly sad. And I still feel sorry for Officer Walters.
16
The point remains that Portland Police need to elevate the level of their response in stages.

When a confused, bloody, doddering old man with mental issues walks toward you with a "hobby knife?"

You tase 'em.

...or you might even just knock that "hobby knife" out of the elderly man's hand.

When I was served overseas in the Army, we learned many different techniques to neutralize an immediate danger. And in an urban environment, deadly force is the last resort.

Given my background, I especially appreciate the Police Officers' jobs and the risk they voluntarily face. But if they can't follow simple elevation protocol, no one is forcing them to take that big paycheck and follow the rules.

Bad Robot:

The fact that you buy into that 911 conspiracy crap says it all. Talk about pablum... which rhymes with moron... which is you.
18
Let me think, hmmm, what would I rather be cut with? I say cake or death and I choose cake.
Wait, that's not one of the choices then I say neither, Thank you very much.
19
have you thanked a policeman lately? you should.

Please wait...
