I enjoyed We3, and not just because there is a murderous robot bunny. Homeward Bound is right.

There's also a short story of a similar nature by someone or other, though I can't remember who.

We3 was good. And sad. Its premise is strongly reminiscent of The Plague Dogs by Richard Adams, though that's a long book and not a short story.

Yeah, very gut punchy. I think because, as Jason pointed out, voices are so dog/cat/rabbit-like.

Oh, and the story was Floating Dogs by Ian McDonald. But it's in no way as whimsical as the title implies.
