Thank christ this is over. When you look up "epic fail" on wikipedia, it should point to the Recall² effort and use the original Recall effort for citation.

Good riddance, weirdos.
2
he also attacked John Kitzhaber's role in the failure. i can understand attacking Kate Brown & John Kroger, but Kitz? he does give Beau mad props (as the kids say) for his "growth and courage".

Jasun also announces that they'll be using the prowess gained in 2 recall failures to un-elect Sam in 2012. after all, their database is so big, they were able to not recall the Mayor, so obviously they'll be to be major players in the 2012 campaign.

about time this was ended. maybe Wurster, Gordly, Volm and the rest will finally get the message that Portlanders do not want to waste their time on expensive, divisive recalls and would prefer to wait until the election to make a change (or not).

This has been highly entertaining. Does Avel Gordly endorse the recall fail letter as well?
4
Can we get odds on Recall^3?

I hope it happens. These people are like public servants of lulz.
5
On a related note, I met Beau Breedlove at Red Dress PDX. I was a little starstruck.

He brought gay men down? I'm pretty sure he gave a few of them more press and "clients" then they'd otherwise have. And as a whole, he brought gay men up by showing that screaming about our sex lives is losing traction, even if you claim it's about a lie.

Sam's lie is forgivable to me as a gay man because he came out, like I did, before Lawrence v. Texas was repealed when gay sex was so taboo that gay politicians were treated as eunuchs. This was also a time when, in many states, you could easily be arrested for having sex in your own home, and it certainly happened. It's a hard reaction to shake, and unlike most politicians of his cut, he came out and admitted it finally without stepping down.

I also have to point out that this whole BS about it being focused on the lie is utter crap. Can we, as a country, move beyond this? If a person lies about their personal life, just drop it. As long as they did no wrong in their private conduct, which there is no evidence or proof of in this case, it's a meaningless target.

I thank Sam for not stepping down and for proving in a roundabout way that sex scandals have no place as a weapon against the GLBT community, politicians, or people in general*. I thank Jasun for proving that even the most tenaciously anti-gay activist can fail in using a sex scandal to destroy their enemies.

*Tiger Woods.

Are Wurster and Volm still fucking?
8
Fucking each other, that is.

On behalf of the people of Portland: Thank you to Jasun Wurster and the recall campaigners.

For fighting back against the idea that Portland is a utopia populated only by reasonable and tolerant people, and the hype and smugness that image has brought.

For doing your part for a fairer wealth distribution, by taking donations from the very rich and conservative and spreading the money around the community.

For proving beyond doubt that when people say "If at first you don't succeed, try again" they really are just annoying twats who don't know what they're talking about.

And most of all, for providing us with endless entertainment watching the slapstick-esque pratfalls and desperation of the campaign, reminiscent of Chaplin at his best.

So, thank you for all the services you have provided, and the sacrifices you have made to your personal dignity to do so. We truly appreciate it.

Stu for comment of the week. Fuck it, comment of the month.
11
Wurster: "Democracy! Wah!" Everyone else: "Democracy! Whoo!"

Hey, what happened to that campaign to rename a street after DOUG Adams? I need a political campaign that doesn't make me want to beat myself to death with a clipboard. Hitchhikers Guide, yall! Step up! I need this!
12
The thought of the little old ladies of the recall spending their morning reading through Screeching Weasel lyrics warms the heart.
13
Well done, Stu & littlebeirut.
14
Bring on Recall 3!!!

Just kidding.
15
I'm really glad that's over. Also, that's one of the greatest website designs I've ever seen: "background-color: gray".
16
I second. Stu with the comment of the month!
17
Mary Volm, I was considering voting for you! No longer.

Just a few things came to mind after reading the recall website.

Jasun has always maintained that this was not about the gay issue. Yet, he brings up it and essentially speaks on behalf of the gay community. Why bring it up now? Mad because we did not listen to Marty Davis? Oh, and just because someone hangs out with a woman that has a gay son doesn't make them an expert on gay culture.

He has a database of 50,000 voters that want him gone. Okay, a) I thought you only needed 32,000 to trigger the recall. b) that is still well below the 50.1% majority that is going to be needed. c) I bet we could find 50,000 Portlanders who long for the good ol' days of Reagan.

With all the mentioning of Mary Volm, it makes me wonder if this recall was just a rouse to get her to be Mayor in the first place. The recallers always seemed never to give any specifics about who would be their choice for mayor and always just said something like "someone will emerge as a good candidate."

He wants the media to be the "watchdogs." I wouldn't worry about that. The media will always pounce on a good sex scandal when they see it. The media exists to make money and sex scandals always provide some extra income. Anyone wonder besides me if WW would still be coming out with a print version if this "scandal" had not happened?

I am just so tired of hearing about sex scandals. Be they gay/straight or D/R.
19
Does this mean that Breedlove stories can be filed with Tonya Harding stories from now on?
20
Jasun keeps getting wackier and Sam keeps sticking to his talking points. Stay gold, Portland. (Job creation, high school graduation and sustainability... SNORT!)
21
Stu FTW!

@ Buzz -

I wonder if we ever find out who was the main financier for the campaign, that it winds-up being Volm?

That would be a lusciously awesome end to this sordid story.
23
People really need to call Victoria Tafts radio show and rub it in her face. She absolutely promised her listeners this recall would get through. She failed, just like all the right wing nuts in our community. People were really seeing through the veil of bigotry and hatred that formed the whole recall campaign in the beginning, thats why noone would sign the petition, I personally had two people ask me so sign it. Both times, they presented a blank petition form, not very encouraging.....
24
You should've seen the asswipes at the Blazers game last week (last one of the season). They were right out front trying to catch people going to a Blazers game. Effective.

Those two dickheads coupled with Dudley's shameless Republican governor candidacy plugs (during the game) pretty much ensured I will be staying home and watching all games on Comcast from here on out.

At least the beer is cheaper and I get to see all the replays in HD.
25
I was asked to sign it one time during both campaigns. This guy came on the MAX in Old Town and walked down the crowded aisle and showed the clipboard to everyone. Everyone looked at him and shook their heads no or ignored him. So much for this community outrage. Maybe that 50,000 voters is including people in Beaverton, Gresham and Vancouver.
26
Not a good Day for Portland.
27
Mary Volm has my support. I don't care what the excuse was to get this mayor out, but it needs to happen and the non-performing trifecta need to be brought down one way or another. I say, let's break it up.

Please wait...
