It is ridiculous how far this all got with South Park. The show was trying to show that it is wrong to use fear and intimidation to get what you want, and they are proving just that. How can someone say that what they show is offensive, and in the next sentence threaten their lives for doing that. That's what is offensive. Haven't they realized that every religion has been subjugated to the same ridicule, anyone remember scientology? I remember the debates that it brought up, but I'll give Tom Cruise a point for this, no matter how much he whined, and how much press it received, no one threatened Matt and Trey's life. The worst thing that happened in that situation is that the show lost it's long time character Chef.
We live in an era where science and technology is king, we've started to unlock the mysteries the religion. We are starting to finally rely on knowledge that has been scientifically tested and not handed down through stories that are over thousands of years old. What we all need to do is stand up against any religious extremist, and I don't mean exclusively Muslim, because the Christians have been guilty of the same shannigans (anyone remember when people where trying to get Harry Potter banned because it would convert the children into witches, or extremist groups pushing for a Christian agenda in public schools) and I mean towards anyone who wants to stifle the progression of rational thought.
It's ok to be spiritual and to have faith,.. in our private lives, but we should not let religion dictate the rules of the country, we should not let our most important decisions be altered or affected by religious beliefs because this will only hold us back. I certainly do not want to live in a place where religious beliefs dictate my actions, because beliefs can change to suit whoever happens to be in charge.
I think America is also taking this threat too lightly, this extremist group is threatening the lives of 2 people, 2 Americans to be more exact, for using one of our fundamental freedoms. This act of intolerance from the extremist group is being taken too lightly, and if they somehow succeed, I guarantee it would become a full on war.
I am not advocating any sort of prejudice towards any of the religions, I just think that we shouldn't be pushed around anymore because we don't believe in specifically what they believe, and we shouldn't cater to any of the religions. Take religion out of the classroom, take it out of the court room, take it out of the law. The only way that we can be truly tolerant is to be objective.
All South Park does every Wednesday night is to hold a mirror up to society, it's not their fault if we don't like what we see staring back, we were the ones who made the image.
