Look at the headline right below this story for sad juxtapositions.

And fuck this whole stupid nation. We suck.
2
+1 RB. So long as there's people who think kid's comics are more important than the assassination of a politician / the fact that people are still allowed to own automatic weapons in this fucked up country of ours, there's no possibility of us catching back up with Europe and China.
3
Jesus fuck, these right-wingers are becoming a real menace! And yet, folks are worried about so-called "Islamic" terrorism. Fucking idiots!!!
4
@Stu and RB: I agree. In light of this morning's horrific events, no one should do a single thing they might otherwise have enjoyed (or certainly write about it on a general interest blog! for shame!) for the rest of ever. Also, retroactively.

Seriously, I get the wish that more people should be more aware, more tuned in to keeping our country decent and just. And what happened is totally reprehensible—something that I hope we'd all be just as upset about, even if the party affiliations and politics were reversed.

I know that's where you're coming from. But, c'mon...
5
@rich bachelor & Stu To be fair, Nex posted at 4:32 am in the morning;he couldn't have known
6
@ rich, well put, that's almost exactly what I dropped in to say, minus the juxtaposition part.

Here's a list of his favorite books:
Books:I had favorite books: Animal Farm, Brave New World, The Wizard Of OZ, Aesop Fables, The Odyssey, Alice Adventures Into Wonderland, Fahrenheit 451, Peter Pan, To Kill A Mockingbird, We The Living, Phantom Toll Booth, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, Pulp,Through The Looking Glass, The Communist Manifesto, Siddhartha, The Old Man And The Sea, Gulliver's Travels, Mein Kampf, The Republic, and Meno.

I know almost all here at PM won't agree, but this is the reading portfolio of a leftist.
8
Oh, Jesus. Of course Nex had no idea how that would look several hours after it was written, and I didn't say that he did.
And Denis: you forgot to preface that with "...not to painfully overstate it, but..."
9
Denis: of course I don't blame Nex for not seeing into the future (although I still think the headline is ridiculous for something about videogames). But I do think that given what has happened since, you should go back and change it. After all, you are an editor, time to do some editing.
10
Fair point, RB.

" The gunman, described as a white male in his mid-20s..."

All of a sudden, people are hush hush on the idea of racial profiling. Seemed like such a great fucking crime-fighting tool when it came to Black drivers, migrant workers, & bearded men who "looked" Muslim. Why not enforce it now, in the wake of such a glaringly clear & present threat?
12
So a politician gets shot (along with a healthy number of bystanders), presumably over her voting in favor of health care reform (?) and the best you (Andy from Beaverton) can do is start speculating on the political orientation of the gunman based on books he supposedly liked. YOU are the reason this country is in such a mean and degraded state of political hell.
13
*Any* list of books would be "the reading portfolio of a leftist"; we all know that tea baggers are functional illiterates
14
Andy, yes, as we all know "We the Living" is by that famous leftist, Ayn Rand.

I'm not even into video games, and rarely take note of Nex's posts except to crack wise if possible, but demanding retroactive bowdlerization of Blogtown is out of line, Stu.

It's a terrible tragedy. I hate guns. I want gun control. I'm not a fan of violent video games. But get a grip, people.
15
It took three posts for someone to blame 'right-wingers'. I was only responding to DamosA making an accusation without any evidence.
It would be hard to call Ayn Rand's "We the Living" a 'right-winger' book. It was as close to an auto-biography as Rand got and it was more about Russia in its post revolutionary state. This is what probably drew the shooter to read this book to learn what life would be like after a revolution, a revolution he sought. That is probably why he also read Mein Kampf and The Communist Manifesto.
16
Andy, if someone who is hated by right-wingers is shot, it's not an amazing jump to assume that it was very likely a right-winger did it. This nut's politics will be sorted eventually, to the extent that it's intelligible at all. In any case he doesn't seem like much of a leftist based on the following quotes attributed to him:

"The majority of the citizens of the United States of America have never read the United States of America's Constitution. You don't have to accept the federalist laws."

"No! I won't play debt with a currency that's not backed by gold and silver!"

A democratic Congresswoman is shot at a public event in AZ, a state that's been a powderkeg ov right-wing activity. The woman had already been targeted before by rght-wing talibaggers. At least 6 other people were murdered.
It's not at all a stretch to assume that, maybe, a right-winger is the perp. So far, that's EXACTLY how it's unfolding.
18
Fuck this. We are letting Nex off of the hook. Why can't he see into the future? Don't you have a god damn undergraduate degree? What is that good for if not foreseeing what your headline will mean in 8 hours?
19
Gee Rusty: a little late, aren't you?
20
Hey Todd, why are you such a Tard? Try reading an understanding a comment before replying to it.
"Andy, if someone who is hated by right-wingers is shot, it's not an amazing jump to assume that it was very likely a right-winger did it." You have or anyone else, that this joker was a 'right-winger'. Judging by his reading list and videos, he was a revolutionary nut job. I called him out as a leftist because in the third comment here, DamosA called him a 'right-winger' without any evidence. JFK (Democrat) was killed by Lee Harey Oswald (Communist). RKF (Democrat) was killed by Sirhan Sirhan (Arab Socialist). How many other examples would you like of individuals of more extreme ideology than the killed victim?
As far as the gold backed currency crap goes, nuts on both extreme sides want that. It will never happen and if it could, it would need the Supreme Court to step in and change some past decisions. We don't have enough gold, even at current market rates, and the Treasury values the gold we do have at $42.22. Don't believe me? http://www.fms.treas.gov/gold/current.html and http://www.fms.treas.gov/bulletin/b2010_4u… The numbers are no where close, even at current gold values.
As far as his quotes go, did you even read his videos? Did you not see in his book list what all the books had in common? Revolution. Why would you assume he is a 'right-winger' based upon these books?
21
@Andy: Nice first sentence, it shows that you're committed to reasoned discourse.
22
Actually, the fun part about Oswald is that he seems to have been either a Communist or stridently anti-Communist, depending on when you happened upon him. A true lone nut, or the world's best patsy.

Just to say it: the "sad juxtaposition" wasn't that there was a violent video game under discussion. What I was referring to was the phrase "The Six Most Important Words You'll Read Today." That's all. A fairly dumb joke that set off all this...Aw, never mind.
23
@rb: Yes, it was only a fairly dumb joke....but in the hands of angry Blogtownspeople, it started a commentflagration.

Be more careful next time! The feelings you save may be your own.

24
That was just a joke, BTW. And a fairly dumb one.
25
Todd, do you listen to Lars? You seemed to learn one of his defense mechanisms when he doesn't want to answer some difficult questions. He will focus on a comment or personal attack from the caller and soon the listeners forgot what the questions were. Weak.

Please wait...
