I think the theory behind both is that increased taxes and regulations from these laws decreases jobs. Therefore, the thinking goes, that decreasing taxes and regulations will increase jobs. Agree or disagree, but I think from their perspective, they are focused on the economy and jobs.
Now, if they start talking about abortion, gay marriage, and the like, they deserve to be ragged on for ignoring the economy. Otherwise, it's a policy debate, not a question of focus.
