Actually Winco is not a bad store for basics.....I mean the artsy Whole Foods hipster does'nt shop there and would mortified to be caught dead there, but at least you won't pay 3 $ for one tomato (that's average tasting). 3$ a ib for steak? I'm in.
What does "employee-owned" really mean with chains like this? Isn't it just that they give stock ownership as one of their benefits? WinCo is not even union, right?
And Geyser, worker-owned typically means that ownership of the company is held in part by each employee (as part of being hired, you receive a stake in the company). Each employee therefore gets a vote for the board of directors, etc, as shareholders do at major corporations.
Bob's Red Mill is also worker-owned now, and Full Sail Brewing has proudly always been that way.
That reminds me. I'm out of bulk staples and should go to Winco. Plus, they usually have Full Sail for about 5 bucks a six-pack.
@Oregonmetry correct on both. As a former union employee at Fred Meyer I can tell that 1) Managers hate the union(they are non Union) and 2) the union can't really do fuck all. Agree with Blabby too. Whole Foods does some things right but are outrageously overpriced. I also have a Grocery outlet near me. And the beaverton farmers market which is way better than you might think. Come to think of it, Park blocks is a 20 minute MAX ride away. I Win! Whats my prize?
@pdxdirect yeah pretty much. I don't buy fish at winco either generally. Then again I know people who fish often and generally don't pay anything. Or I go visit my Indian friends. Trust me, when I buy fresh salmon for about 2$ a pound, we laugh our asses of when hipster tool pays 12 at Whole Fraud
Oh, and everyone should be reading the Gawker coverage of the Toronto Whole Foods quitter's letter to his whole region of the WF company.
Pretty excellent stuff, with literally hundreds of emails coming in to respond. I'd link to it, but it's, you know, Friday afternoon. And there's beer here.
like there aren't 2 co-ops and a Food Fight?!
