They really painted themselves into a corner when they mastered everything on video. Not sure if it was for economic reasons, but it was short sighted regardless.

Erik, have you noticed sound problems with TNG on netflix? Some episodes have some serious warped tape problems going on, like a VHS that has been watched too many times.

I look forward to the review. I love Trek, but I've never been able to stand the price point they put their seasons out at. ALSO. If they ever re-release the original series, they NEED to go back to the all original effects. The new ones are horrible.

@Marq: Yeah, the sound is wonky sometimes. I'm actually convinced that whenever I tell Netflix to play me a TNG (which is how I do it: "NETFLIX! Play me a TNG!"), some poor bastard is hitting "play" on a VCR/TV combo somewhere and then taping it with a 1987 camcorder, a live feed of which is then piped into my apartment.

He has two, you know.

THE STAR TREK: T0S BLU-RAYS WERE JAW-DROPPINGLY AMAZING!!! TOO BAD THAT TNG IS BORING. DS9 IS WHERE THE KOOL KIDS LIKE TO HANG OUT. UNFORTUNATELY, ERIK IS NOT ONE OF THE KOOL KIDS.

Jean-Luc's got nothing on the Duke. http://t.co/tXB4Y6i8

I have all seven seasons on DVD. Got the boxed set in Shenzhen for $50!

Sounds like Marq may already know this, but Erik - the show was not shot on video. It originated on film. A lot of the effects shots and compositing were done on video, but only through season 2.

From wikipedia:
"At a Star Trek convention in Las Vegas in August 2010, a representative for CBS Consumer Products was quoted as saying that remastering the show for HD would be "extremely difficult."[43] As with the original series, TNG was shot on 35mm film, including most of the major visual effects elements (for example, shots of ships in space), but unlike the original series, most other effects and compositing were done at SD resolution on D1 video, a policy discontinued after Season 2 and never employed in subsequent spinoff series."

GRAHAM, I LOVE DEEP SPACE NINE TOO. I DON'T CARE WHAT THE OTHER TREKKIES SAY, IT REALLY IS THE BEST SERIES TO DATE.

Oh, look, another Troi episode. God dammit. WHEN WILL MY DS9 BE ON NETFLIX!?
10
Wait. I think you mean "moose knuckle", not "camel toe".

Best Trek's series in order:
1. Deep Space 9
2. Next Generation (a close 2nd)
3. The original series
4.-----
There are no other trek's as far as I'm concerned.

Today something was making a very TNG-like sound during the editorial meeting and I had this strong image of WSH as a funnier, louder, southern Jean-Luc.

@sgtgrumbles: I stand corrected! If I had some sort of Trek-related reward I would give it to you. I don't.

Awesome. I'm very stoked about DS9 streaming. THANKS FOR POSTING ERIK, YOU MADE MY DAY.

Also, the animated series is on streaming now. But any fan who'd watch it already has it on DVD.

DS9 > Enterprise > TNG > TOS >>>> Voyager

Just for more nerd-correctness:
The effects are not being re-done digitally, they are being re-composited from the original filmed elements. So glowing puppets and superimposed ghostly faces will still use the same footage, but now it will be in hd quality because they can get all of the elements of those effects from the original negatives (originally it was all composited in video, thus the need for re-compositing).
I assume the same is true for things like phaser shots, display readouts, and tractor beams. But if any of those things originated in video quality, they'll have to be redone from scratch.
In accordance with nerd custom, because of this error, I must now say: "worst. post. evar."

Please wait...
