I like this convo. It’s something I’ve been dealing with a lot myself--as someone who’s from a small, rural town, and shuffles back and forth from Portland to the Midwest. The longer I live in the city, the more sensitive I become to the different styles and ways of life, i.e. the more cowboy hats I notice back home, the more American flags I notice.
Though I think these photos aren’t influenced so much by preconceived urbanite ideas as they are by specific precedence in photohistory--like the FWP, and Robert Frank (who Abrahamson mentions, and who you can see a lot of in these pictures).
