SMT is my favorite game series and I was looking forward to P3 for the longest time. I remain unhappy with the direction the franchise has taken, not the least of which is the loss of Kazuma Kaneko as lead artist.
"but this Wired review makes a solid argument as to why everyone with even the faintest interest in the genre should own the game". Also written by Earnest "Nex" Cavalli.
@cat & beard: Granted, it does include anime cliches, but given that it's a roleplaying game set in a Japanese high school, would you really expect different?
And there's an entire Megami Tensei purist argument on the quality of the most recent Persona titles (and, for that matter, of the Shin Megami Tensei games as a whole), but that doesn't detract from the fact that, objectively speaking, Persona 3 is fantastic.
@dfsa987: Well, yeah. Why would I want to promote the work of others? I write for a living. Obviously I'm a narcissist.
I kept Suikoden 5 around as I felt that one brought back the quality the early games had. We will not speak of 3, for it was an abomination and 4 was mostly forgettable.
SMT Nocturne > SMT Strange Journey > Persona 2 > Devil Survivor > SMT2 > P4 > P3

But if you don't want to take my word for it, here's a stupid-huge selection of my colleagues who feel the same way: http://www.metacritic.com/game/playstation…
