I WISH THAT THIS HAD BEEN SET IN MODERN DAY RATHER THAN IN SOME SORT OF OLD-TIMEY BULLSHIT.
2
I DIDN'T REALIZE THAT BAZ LUMINISTICRISET DIRECTED 'STRICTLY BALLROOM'. EVERYTHING IS FORGIVEN.
3
In 3D? Really. Just... wow.
4
WHY LEO? WHY 3D? WHY MAKE THIS MOVIE AT ALL?? Whhhyyyyyyyyyy???
5
HOLLYWOOD: DESTROYING EVERYTHING YOU LOVE SINCE EPISODE ONE.
6
Yes, why is this even necessary? Is not everyone sick to death of this story?
7
The only reason I will eventually watch this on DVD/Netflix: Amitabh Bachchan!!! (Also the music choices in that trailer were TERRIBLE. Nobody knows how to make a good trailer anymore.)
8
Are there ANY movies you like Allison? Just kidding, this looks awful. So I am going to go see Prometheus, and if any one gives me spoilers, I will jam a traffic cone in your porthole!
9
I'm going to start exclaiming "Baz Luhrmann!" instead of "holy shit!" As in "Baz Luhrmann! Stop! PLEASE SOMEBODY STOP BAZ LUHRMANN"
10
I'd sign a petition to stop Baz Luhrmann...from pretty much doing anything. I'm torn...I do love Carey Mulligan, but everything else is just so...OMG BAZ LUHRMANN. It's like every movie is just a ginormous OMG BAZ LUHRMANN JIZZ FEST.

I'm also stealing Erik's new catchphrase.

1:50. Old-timey CGI Cars?! Old-timey CGI cars!
12
Well, the earlier one (the Redford-Farrow-Waterston-Dern one) was crap, too. Regardless of what people of my parents' generation think.
13
Oh, and might I add: just fucking kill me.
14
Pro: It's a great story that I don't even think Leo and Baz can fuck up.
Con: High School students will watch this instead of reading the book.
Pro: I like the super crazy glossy sheen. I'm just going to play the gay card here and move on.
Con: Leo and Spiderman
Pro: Mulligan

I'll watch it and probably enjoy it. Though I think they should have chosen Ryan Gosling for Gatsby. I have this idea of Baz saying to a young Leo in 1997, "I CAN'T WAIT UNTIL YOU'RE OLD ENOUGH TO BE MY GATSBY. DON'T FORGET TO USE SUNTAN LOTION!"

@C&B, I never tire of this story.
15
@Fruit Cup: It's a boring story about boring people. The symbolism is as subtle as Graham. But I respect your opinion.

This movie though! The casting is terrible. Carey Mulligan is making the same face she made during the entirety of Drive. And Leo is aging not so well, he looks older than 37, too old to play Gatsby, anyways. You're never getting that Oscar, Leo.
16
I, too, respect your opinion. But I have fond memories of reading it. Probably the first "real" book I read... So. Yeah. Different experience. I'm not great with nuance. So overt symbolism is fine by me. The characters aren't boring!

Passion! Romance! Cars! Cigars! Danger!
17
@C&B: I'M NOT SURE IF I SHOULD BE INSULTED OR NOT. WHICH MEANS I PROBABLY SHOULD BE.
18
If this was shot on an iPhone by Gus Van Sant every above commenter would be creaming themselves. Keep on keepin it real, folks!
19
@ARENIT: NO ONE HERE HAS SUCKED ANY GVS DICK SINCE PARANOID PARK CAME OUT. GEEZ, GET A FUCKING BOOK.

Let me just read back arenit's comment as I understand it:

"Thing I'm assuming about your likes/dislikes added to what I suspect is your reason for liking/disliking whatever it is we're talking about here leading to blanket dismissal of what everyone else has had to say thus far, leading to me feeling superior to them, for some reason."

Right?

It is only proper to exclaim "BAZ LUHRMANN!" at precisely the same moment as one's monocle is popping out.

Please wait...
