E-Z troll: In the video or site, do they mention if/how they'll be taking any better care of the next $7,000 they raise?
2
CC beat me to it. FDIC insured financial institutions are notoriously capable of handling $7000 in cash securely.

I'm gonna write this up for the paper this week, I think, and I've got an email out in part to ask that very question.
4
Thanks Alison. I think it's a worthy cause. But people have to know that - short of sealing it in your wall - your house is NOT a great place for storing large sums of money.

I'm guessing they didn't want to trust any one person with the money in his/her personal account, and they also didn't want to incorporate in any way, as they would have to do to get an entity account.

Further, if $7K was stolen in a burglary, it either wasn't hidden very well at all, or it was stolen by someone who knew where to look.

Any way you look at it, the money's handling is obviously troubling for anyone considering financially bailing them out.

Have they tried looking in their coat pockets? I occasionally forget money in mine. And then later I'm like, "Surprise Money!". Because that's the best kind.

Also, take it from me, don't leave your cash in giant "$$$" bags because that's just asking for trouble.

Yeah, we're not a professional entity by any stretch. The money was hidden pretty well, but the burglar went through the whole house pretty well, too. Discussions like this, while necessary, seem to forget that we are people and we got our house violated. The slam fund was not the only thing stolen, nor was it the most painful. It sucked. Bad.

Now, I know that these things happen and we are not the first group of people to have bad things happen to us, but please remember that we are people. That being said, steps have been taken, new bank accounts have been set up, and while we can't guarantee that bad things won't happen again, we are as safe as we can be.

We are kind of uncomfortable with the fact that this is going so viral. Our community has already raised over 5,000 dollars in a few days. Nobody gets paid for this. This is a community of all volunteers. I've been the slam organizer for about three years, and have never made a dime. We do this because we love it. We are doing a great job rebuilding. I am proud of the community I am a part of.

If anybody reads this, and wants to donate, feel free. If you don't want to donate to us, think of an arts organization you dig, and give to them.

Thanks,
Eirean

Not snarky, genuinely curious: Why does that generosity and support make you uncomfortable?
9
The community's support doesn't make us uncomfortable, but there is an embarrassment to the whole thing. We got caught in a vulnerable moment and a year's worth of community work got stolen.

It completely sucks.

Also, the endless comments about how we were irresponsible get hard to take. It's been over a week of hearing that kind of stuff. We know it's justified and people don't realize they are the 45th person to make that comment but it's hard not to get defensive especially when you are dealing with feelings of guilt and all the other crap that comes with a situation like this.

It's just a shame that the first exposure that this community is getting is because of this and not the massive successes we've had.

We are thankful for the support and the wellwishes, but I hope you can understand the other parts as well.

Hope that explains it,
Eirean

I think the phrase, "yeah we fucked up and learned a hard lesson," has a lot of legs in a situation like this.

Yeah, we fucked up and w've learned a really hard lesson.
