If a person wants to have trans-gender operations, that is their choice. However, don't expect tax-payers to pay for it.

Damn, we almost made it through the week.

Yeah, right Spindles....
Manning, aside from being a dumbass whose apology fell on my own deaf ears for betraying his fellow servicemen and his own oath - has a COCK. That makes him male, now at least.
I also don't feel we, as taxpayers, shouldn't have to pay for his latest attention gathering stunt.
One old pic in drag does not a female make.
And while I still have belief in the power of imagination, just because I may think of myself as a unicorn doesn't make me one.
The fact that just about every news organization out there, usually considered far left or left of center (FOX and Wall St Journal being notable exceptions) - should tell you something is horribly misplaced in Holms reasoning.
But then again, it doesn't surprise me either.
The girl is thick. I said it.

I read Barbara's articles on here frequently and I haven't read one yet that I don't fully agree with, on everyone I have read the comments make me fell bad for the small minded person behind the keyboard of the computer from which that comment originated. We do not decide someones gender based on how they appear to us, that person knows who they are and what gender they are based on how they fell. I don't understand why some people can't understand that.

Gender is not just how somebody imagines themselves to be but it is also a physical state of genitalia. I'm all for people doing whatever they want and not discriminating against anybody but honestly if you were born with a penis you are a man and if you were born with a vagina you are a woman (using terminology that is commonly used in the English language). If you feel like something got mixed up along the way somehow I'm all for calling a he a she or a she a he but I'm not obligated to take a trip to imagination land just to humor you. I don't care what a doctor does to you downstairs you can never honestly achieve the gender assignment you were not born with. As a straight male, personally speaking, I would want to know what exactly is going on so that I can make an intelligent decision regarding my own personal course of action should certain situations arise. Call me close-minded but the thought of being bisexual (or trisexual?) is not something I am interested in, and I feel like that is a legitimate personal choice I should be allowed to make. I am perfectly fine with being friends with or interacting with a transgendered person and referring to them as they should see fit but quite frankly I would never want to have sex with somebody that had a gender reassignment surgery. Hypothetically speaking it would presumably be better for all parties involved if a situation like that arose and there was no cover up or deceit involved to prevent bad feelings on the part of any of the involved parties. The Crying Game was not a very fulfilling movie viewing experience for me. I think people should be free to express themselves and act however they want as long as it does not infringe on other people's personal liberties, without fear of persecution, but I also should not have to alter my perception of reality to accommodate somebody's belief that they were given a raw deal. Ideally we could all occupy the same space openly and get along with each other because gender and sexuality are only really a relatively small part of day to day existence.

Okay whatever I guess gender and sex are technically separate terms but i still think that both matter in social situations in certain circumstances.
7
Yeah, totally inspiring. Now transgendered people will be associated with a self-centered, delusional traitor. That's exactly what they were hoping for.

Thank you for your column, everyone who has wasted 30 seconds in its glory is now 2 IQ points dumber for having read it.
8
Whistleblowers are traitors now? You people that think this way are government/media puppets; conformists; learn to think for yourselves for once in your miserable lives.
9
I was in the US Army. They will never ever spend money on the operation he wants. He enlisted as a man and they will discharge him as one.

The military doesn't have to do shit but feed him.
10
Chicostix- Manning isn't a private citizen. Manning is a member of the US Army. Just to get his security clearances he had to go through extensive background checks and interviews. He knew what he was doing and what the repercussions would be for his actions. There is no whisleblowing in the service nor are there constitutional protections. Its going to be a long 30 years for him.
11
ill Paxton, Manning could be out in 8 years. I won't comment on the verdict itself. You are correct in that I am sure Manning was aware of the repercussions

While there might be a large amount of intersectionality between cissexism and misogny; they are not the same thing. Holm's grasp on what these concepts mean and how they play out are sadly lacking.
13
I see there are 11 dislikes for my blog statement. Why? Do you honestly think the tax-payers should pay for his/her operations? Please explain your thinking, cause I don't understand it.
14
@ujfoyt I would rather my tax dollars went to giving a trans person peace with their body than go to political oil wars.

Also, gender and sex are two very different things. Gender is socially defined while sex is biologically defined. Saying that Chelsea's penis makes her a man is technically incorrect.

@Graham And while misogyny and cis-sexism may be two separate branches of bigotry, they both fall under gendered issues which can be dealt with using a feminist perspective, which this blog represents. Holm even briefly addresses that this is a broader issue than simple misogyny in paragraph one. It would have been a good thing to delve more into, sure, but it's a pretty short word count she's working with.

Kendra, no one wants wars - even Vets or those serving in the military. And surely you must be aware of the still very high suicide rates for people after going through a sex change. Doesn't seem to work at all in giving peace or happiness.

Really, I don't care if we call him Betsy Ross, but he is still a male - having a penis. This is the defenition of being male.
16
If you refer to him as Bradley, use the male, if you refer to her as Chelsea, use the female. How is that?

What does it say on her driver's license? Seems to me, you can refer to him either way.

All I have to do is claim a different name and everyone has to call me that, because it is my identity?
Hey everyone, my name is Sticks! I carry around drumsticks in my back pocket everywhere I go! That is who I am! That is my identity! Call me Sticks or it is a hate crime!
17
Sticks, I will call you whatever you like, as it is only polite to call someone by their preferred proper noun. It is also polite to call people by their preferred pronouns. It's like walking into a building and someone is coming in directly behind you; would you shut the door in their face or hold it open for them?

I ate a burrito last night and it was pretty good

Please wait...
