The Golden Gate came in under budget and ahead of schedule. Not sure what changed over the century...

Is Conway Construction, the company that installed the polymer deck, paying for all the repairs? Conway is the manufacturer of the faulty decking. conwayconstruction.net

When the Golden Gate was built, labor rates were cheap. And there were so many people looking for work, you didn't dare slack off, or you were fired and replaced by someone who would actually work. Unlike today.

The Golden Gate was built by public employees and not the lowest bidder. Another example of a private contractor not fulfilling it's commitment.
