Yeah, we can totally count on developers to meet their affordable housing requirements. And if they don't do that, we can totally count on the city to enforce the law and uphold their contracts with the developers.

Is this basically exactly what the city promised, and then didn't deliver on, when SoWhat when up in the first place? It is going to be different this time, why?

Hopefully? A big reason the initial plan didn't pan out was that the market crashed, and instead of reaping huge benefits in the form of TIF money, the city found it was unable to get financing to build what it promised. It took a loss on the first property that it wanted to build affordable housing on.

We're in sunnier times now, but of course that could always change.

"A neighborhood once envisioned as holding a cross-section of Portland's incomes and demographic has become largely the province of the privileged..."

I never really believed that it was really ever planned as or would ever be anything other than Pearl District Part II... The thing is though that the Pearl District actually had some history, old buildings, and businesses that were there prior to the full-on redevelopment or the neighborhood. Whereas the South Waterfront is just a mega version of something like Orenco Station. At least just get some decent restaurants down there so we can gawk at yuppies.

Instead of trying to worry about putting affordable housing in Portland's most expensive areas, how about we just do something like pave or build sidewalks on some of those rutted dirt roads on the Eastside.

LOLZ...a developer is going to follow an agreed upon thing with city hall? Is that like the last time they agreed to build affordable housing down there and just didn't do it for about 5 years?

fyi, the pearl district median income is only $32,000 and nearly 25% of the total housing stock are affordable units. There are 7 huge subsidized apartment buildings with more on the way. just because it looks new doesn't mean its market rate. that's the point.

Please wait...
