So they're filthy rich, living in expensive houses, and they're on "food stamps"? How does that work, exactly? If people are fraudulently collecting food benefits and you think they're leeching, go ahead and report them. I've known people who relied on recovering edible food from dumpsters that would otherwise go to waste, and they didn't feel humiliated by it in the least. Not everyone who is poor shares the same feelings of shame that you take to be some marker of street cred.
And people are allowed to run cafés and coffee shops collectively. There's a long tradition of this type of management within anarchism, which provide examples of alternative models of management. If you don't like that, then go work at Starbucks or McDonalds and see how the top-down approach treats you.

These 'anarchists' are idiots.
3
Yeah, "these anarchists," i.e. the caricatures presented here, are idiotic.
Interesting how if anarchists have any money or privileges in society, they're pigeonholed as "trustafarians" or lifestyle anarchists living in condos or posh houses. And if they're really impoverished and vulnerable, they're pigeonholed as parasites and street urchins who refuse to work for a living. What about those who work really hard, rent their living space, have no substantial savings, etc.? I guess there's no room in the scurrilous stereotypes for all of those folks.

Well said Geyser.

Fassbinder was critical of the "3rd Generation" of anarchists - I wonder what he'd make of these bozo's around here.
6
Anyone else getting tired of 'douche' yet?
7
I agree SugarSpill geyser is right on the money...

Well I was prepared to hate on anarchists, but geyser shamed me out of it. This posting was a little off base. There are plenty of real things to make fun of these people for...like the fact that they seem to think that the CEO of Starbucks cleans up all those broken windows, or that any actual ethnic minority - who they just love to namedrop - supports their cause in any way.

Oh and frankieb, I am amused that you would namedrop fassbinder and make a plural with an apostrophe in the same sentence. As George Bernard Shaw said, "bitches be crazy!"
9
You're welcome.
Oh, you meant Fassbinder, right?

What is it with people constantly saying that they'll "beat the shit out of such 'n such" on-line if they do or say one more thing?

Why don't you tell it to someone's face if you're that passionate about it?
11
IDK DamosA, because you are an imbecile?. Any way, moving past that idiot, Anon has some points but seriously they are lumping a number of behaviors together to justify their existence (or refer to Geysers explanation, it makes more sense). I will agree that white 20-30 something nerd dorks calling N/NE portland "the hood' (stupid fake irony or just annoying nerd behavior) or No Po is stupid and irritating but threatening violence about it is equally dumb.

Showstopper must be [yet] another hipster attempting to be "ironic".

I lived by the Black Cat coffee shop on Alberta for a long time, and I can attest that there are people fitting just this description who hung out there all hours of the day, every day for 5 or 6 years.

I'm not sure what provides economic support for that type of lifestyle, but something has to.

Glad I got the hell away from Alberta.

"anarchists are dumb

Ok, broad generalizations.

It's a haiku, not a policy paper...

What ever happened to haiku henry, anyway? I was really hoping to get a haiku "thing" going...
17
Jamdox has a good point. Where is haiku henry? DamosA you really need to expand your literary horizons. A good blogtown haiku every now and again should be like a cleansing enema or some shit.

I've talked to enough anarchists in Portland in my time that I feel I can accurately comment on this one. They almost always bring the discussion to a place where they make it clear that it's People Like You (i.e. everyone else) who are the problem, and that They (anarchists) are the only ones out there trying to make a difference.

Usually this is followed by some specifics about how the life they lead is somehow more virtuous than mine, and I always tune out while wondering where they got the idea they're making any kind of difference.

Please wait...
