It sounds like you didn't realize that a single line was waiting for seperate check-out registers, and jumped the line.
Perhaps you didn't like the way he spoke to you, but if that was the case that he had been waiting and then you jumped in front - well, I would say something too.
And if it was simply a new lineopening up, you should have offered the first spot off to those that had waited longer than you.
That would be the decent thing to do.
