You weren't having a private conversation if you were in PUBLIC and someone could easily overhear what you were saying. Anyway, sounds like you have a really astute understanding of gentrification. The only solution is to keep white gurls out of our neighborhoods!
2
what does aggro mean?
3
Again. Women in sunglasses looking at people. WHEN WILL THIS NIGHTMARE END??!?
4
Did she glare at you SIDEWAYS from the corner of her glasses, because if so that's really uncool.

Some words I could stand to go the rest of my life without hearing/seeing again:

Twee
Hipster
Gentrification.

Just thought I'd share.
6
@5, u mad hipster?
7
Could someone explain the gentrification situation to me? So, several years ago people living in northeast Portland sold their homes or businesses and white people moved in? Were the people selling their homes or businesses forced to?

I think I understand that area of town used to be predominately african american and now people are upset that white people live there?

I'm not try to stir the pot, just looking for an answer.
8
I am not mad. Just mildly annoyed. I am sure someone would call me a hipster as it seems everyone who uses the term has a different idea about what a hipster is/ looks like.

@7, Exactly. Not trying to stir the pot either, but I do share your confusion there.
9
Man, I had a great response to this written up, and then I screwed up posting it, and now I don't want to rewrite it.

But you would totally be laughing at it right now. Imagine something funny. That's what it would have been like.
10
Don't worry, I'm laughing at your comment about the light rail news.
11
Actually anonie, if you're spending money on that street then you're contributing to gentrification...The Worst Thing Since The Holocaust (tm)!
12
and I thought the gentrification started when they kicked the bike clowns out

or maybe that the bike clowns were responsible for the gentrification

I'm confused too, but I think black folks view of gentrification is when white folks start paying $300,000.00 for houses that are only worth $30,000.00, but the county sees $$$s and raises the value of everyone's property to $300,000.00 and then the black folk can't afford the property taxes anymore and have to move.

TWO IA's in as many days bitching about women in over-sized sunglasses looking at people...

I never thought i'd say this, but i almost wish there were another police shooting here. This city is getting more and more lame.
14

Speaking of locals being all "aggro", i have to say i was rather taken back upon viewing THIS blog entry for just the first time today:

Wow, folks. Really some sensationalist stuff right here. Try dialing it back, alittle, why don't you?
16
Reverse racism? No such thing. It's just called.. wait for it.. racism.
17
*gurl - lol

18
Make me.

Gentrification = businesses bringing jobs into a neighborhood or people buying houses and fixing them up. That is some evil shit!
20
@7 to a degree, yes. But it was a slow process, as was the shift in the Neighborhood. I liked the improvements at first, then I was a bit dismayed at the transformation into hipsterville (damn, I used that word again). Do I think its still an improvement ? Yes. I would also say that many of the white 20-30 something residents moved here in the last ten or even 5 years and seem a rather homogenus sea of dorkdom . Unsure if that is an improvement. @ 19, true but that is a one sided view and while you did not displace people, your city did. How do you feel about that?

There's no way you can be serious. Clearly, you're being sarcastic.

Definition of GENTRIFICATION
: the process of renewal and rebuilding accompanying the influx of middle-class or affluent people into deteriorating areas that often displaces poorer residents
