You know what pisses me off? The cultural appropriation of fairisle patterns. As a person of Danish descent, I'm horribly offended whenever I see a not-that-Scandinavian person wearing a pattern that belongs to MY culture. Do you even understand the multi-strand, double layered knitting techniques that makes these patterns both awesome and warm? No, didn't think so.

Anyway, the cultural appropriation rant was valid the first few times, but every time you bring it up in this forum the issue gets downgraded in terms of people giving a fuck. So good job, your cause is now even with fluoride (either side of the argument, just shut up about it) and angry cyclists.

Every year, millions of people across this country gather together to appropriate an element of my cultural heritage. Worse, they not only appropriate it, but they take the opportunity to act out the worst stereotypes of my people. Of course, I don't ever see IAs about cultural appropriation around St. Patrick's Day. Maybe you could write one of those next year. Or, maybe you could try not giving a shit about things that don't matter. Either way is fine by me.

If I think anyone is "culturally appropriating" my culture's tradition of cultural appropriation I'm going to slop out some clunky sentences on an anonymous blog as soon as humanly possible.

I can't bother to Google "Cultural Appropriation"....can't someone just summarize, please?

You know what I'm pissed about? The cultural appropriation of Sperry Topsiders and Madras shorts. I'm a white, straight, Protestant male from New England, and I just can't stand seeing blacks, gays, etc. wearing the clothes that represent our cultural heritage. What's next? Argyle?!

1)Imitation is the highest form of flattery!

2) IA- you appropriated "check yourself" from hip hop. Do you even know who Das EFX is? Iggedy!

3) There's always someone more insightful, knowledgeable, and socially conscious than you.

Oh for god sake. Don't get ear gauges because they're gross and I can't look in the face, and I imagine any time you get in a fight somebody's going to rip them out. But cultural appropriation? Am I supposed to wear a kilt? America's a melting pot. We're all about appropriation. This is a stupid argument. I want to know what culture you are and whether you always wear the customary uniform of your people.

AND IN FACT, plaid is probably the most widely appropriated pattern, taken from the Scottish, who have been hella oppressed historically. So tell me, why is it okay to appropriate from an oppressed white culture, but not from anybody else?

I ask sincerely, because I'm generally kind of annoyed by things like Urban Outfitters selling "Navaho" prints at insane prices that in no way benefit Navahos. I blame the company though, not the ignorant hipsters who shop there. Appropriation is a trickier issue than we were taught in Sociology 101, I'm afraid.

Please wait...
