Seems to me that Clackamas County is being hypocritical to be changing the names of so many landmarks, but not it's own.

Speed read this shit:

Clackamas County will rename Squaw Mountain and other landmarks
The Oregonian
June 12, 2007

Clackamas County plans to remove the word "squaw" from a fifth location, wiping a name often considered derogatory off the county map.

The latest proposal calls for Squaw Mountain Road east of Estacada to have a new name by the end of the year. The county commissioners earlier this year supported a proposal to replace the word "squaw" with "tumala" (tuh-MALL-lah) for Squaw Creek, Lakes, Meadow and Mountain in the Mount Hood National Forest. "Tumala," of Chinook Wawa origin, means tomorrow or after life.

The Oregon Geographic Names Board originally spelled the word "tamala" but now spells it "tumala" in an endeavor to more precisely match the way it is pronounced.

Six years ago, Oregon legislators called for removing the word from state geographical features. Since 2001, the Oregon Geographic Names Board has eliminated "squaw" from about 40 place names in Oregon, said board president Champ C. Vaughan, and has 140 more to go, including about 60 Squaw Creeks.

'Squaw' place names erased from Clackamas County maps
The Oregonian
January 23, 2008

Clackamas County officials are close to removing the word "squaw" from place and road names, seven years after the Oregon Legislature directed them to make the change.

The Oregon Board of Geographic Names and the U.S. Board of Geographic Names in December approved substituting the Chinook Wawa word "Tumala" (tah-MALL-lah) for Squaw Creek, Lakes, Meadow and Mountain in the Mount Hood National Forest east of Estacada.

On Tuesday, the commissioners said they also want to rename Squaw Mountain Road, which they believe is the last place on county maps using the word "squaw," a reference to Native American women that is often considered derogatory.

"Tumala" suggests a spiritual sense of the future or eternal life, according to the Oregon Geographic Names Board.

"Its origin is in the historic interaction between English-speaking fur trappers and the indigenous people of the Columbia River Basin," according to a letter sent to the county by the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Community of Oregon, who supported the change.

At least one county resident criticized the change. In an e-mail to the commissioners, Estacada resident Bruce Poppino wrote: "I am ashamed that my county commissioners are more worried about being 'politically correct' than preserving our past."

Multnomah County needs to be changing it's fucking name, or it's name in mud.
3
The redskins mascot is Mickey Rooney's charecter from breakfast at tiffany's in blackface wearing a feather headdress. The only thing they do halfway is playing football.
4
Isn't a mascot supposed to be a living creature? The Mickey Rooney image is a trademark, not a mascot. Is there somebody in costume that looks like the trademark? If so, then that could be the mascot, like Mike Scheckla, the Portland Trail Blazers' Hippy Fan. I don't watch TV. It's not that I'm a snob, per say, it's just that I tend to travel light.
5
Floyd Schlappie is the chief of the Multnomah tribe. The so-called, "Multnomah County" needs to pay him reparations for having besmirched and misappropriated his honorable name.
6
Would you lookit that, someone's commenting on an IA they submitted themselves. So very sad.
7
Dear Anon, since it's quite clear that your American History education has some gaping holes either from lack of education or willful ignorance here's a quick lesson on the term "Redskins".

The origin of the term "Redskins" is commonly attributed to the historical practice of trading Native American Indian scalps and body parts as bounties and trophies.

Body parts include: Indian fetuses that had been cut from their pregnant mothers, and male and female genitalia.

These body parts were used to decorate weapons, hats, and equipment and were displayed publicly.

If your great-grandmother's labia had become somebody's hat decoration and they named a football team after that practice, I don't think you'd be super excited about it either.
8
Being part Irish, I take offense at the term "The Fighting Irish" too.

"The origin of the term "Redskins" is commonly attributed to the historical practice of trading Native American Indian scalps and body parts as bounties and trophies."

God damn I cannot stand this lame city where dirty hippies make up bullshit like this to try to rile up some fake outrage pitchfork mob. A redskin is another term for a Native American, plain and simple. The way you're trying to twist it is so fucking disingenuous and ridiculous, you're just making shit up out of thin air and the sad part is most of the brainless, jobless, class envying cockstains in these comments will read what you wrote, assume it to be true (because it's yet another vapid "cause" all these boring crackers can rally behind) and retweet it or post it on their generic bullshit tumblrs.
10
Don't make me send you back on the Mayflower, round eye white bread pussy bitch.

Shoots, ennit?
11
I'll call my cousin fucken Joe Runningdeer and the boys, ennit? Those crazy fuckers git down.
12
I don't often say this but Blah Blah fuckety Blah
13
So, I'm guessing it's not The Wops, Kikes, Dagos, or Smilin' Shines?

C'mon, what's the answer? Don't keep us in suspense!
14
I think we can resolve this matter in a civilized fashion. Let's hold a Truth and Reconciliation Tribunal at the Native American Student and Community Center of Portland State University. Then, upon reaching a consensus by the faculty of the Conflict Resolution Department, the administrators, minions, police officers, assistant district attorneys and judges of the so-called, "Multnomah County" can be given a fair trial for Treason and failure to uphold their oath of office, before being found guilty and hanged.

The name Multnomah shall revert to the Injuns, and the County will then fall under the jurisdiction of Portland State University.

OoooO0Oooowww what fun!
15
WHAT'S THAT FRANKIEB? WE CAN'T HEAR YOU - CAN YOU PLEASE TURN DOWN "SHIPPING UP TO BOSTON"?
16
I keep telling you guys, that the only way to get anybody's attention is to sue.
Look what happened to the chain of pancake restaurants that used to be named,
"Little Black Sambo's".
17
Does anybody know the history of the Multnomah Indians, and what a raw, deal they got? The white eyes stole their land, merged their tribe with a couple of other bands of pacifists, and shoved off to a reservation of swamp and thicket. Most of the descendants today, are far from being materially prosperous. Homosexual immigrants are not entitled to rule this land. Reparations are in order for the Multnomah tribe, but equally imperative is for contemptible, Multnomah County judges, contemptuous of Common Law, need to answer for their crimes. If La Raza gets to take back California, then Multnomahns get to decide the fate of Portland. They would probably be willing to settle for cash.
18
@ Dina (Chef/PSfnU/etc.):

"I keep telling you guys, that the only way to get anybody's attention is to sue."

Or, if you wanted to be really clever and get even more attention, you could pretend to be three different people and converse with yourself incessantly about the most nutjob-ass shit in every comment thread within pissing distance. Ever think of trying that?
19
Dina...shut up. Everybody saw Ghost World.
20
You naves are as impotent as a Multnomah County judge out of his jurisDICKtion.
21
I remember Little Black Sambo's; it was a good restaurant. The name, of course, is based upon a classic children's story of that same title. Harmless, good matured, amusement. What's the harm? When they changed the name, I quit going there. It just wasn't the same fun, anymore.
22
Wao, clever wordplay...
23
The first owner of the Chicago Blawkhawks commanded a WWII unit of that name, which was named after Chief Blackhawk a notable Native American of that region, who actually resisted white settlement. The mascot is a guy in a bird costume. Some local high schools have changed their names and mascots eg in 1992 an Illinois HS changed from the Redskins to the Rehawks. How this fits in is matter for debate I guess. I think the Redskins should change their name for obvious reasons
24
Actually, the first Blackhawk team was mostly the original Portland Rosebud team from 1925.
So I think you're wrong but that's OK; everyone makes mistakes.
25
Poopstick is the Rosebud of 'terds.

26
Seriously, if there was a team from Brooklyn called the "New York Kikes" everyone would recognize instantly that that wold be fucking ridiculous!

Because people mythologize native Americans, for some reason it's like "Oh, it's okay, they're just fucking Disney cartoons, big deal."
27
Yall really should do your research. It isn't the native americans complaning. Its uppity white people who don't have anything better to do. The same idiots who have the audacity to compare interacial relationships with homosexuality.
28
The mascot of Portland State University is a Viking. You don't hear any of those paley skinned Norwegians crying about how PSU has made them their bitch. Vikings aren't so tough.
29
The Oneida Indian Nation are the ones campaigning against the NFL team, weste1184, and it's the gay fascists who lobby for homosexuals as in equity with racial minorities.

While it is true that most Native Americans tend to refer to themselves as Indians, it was white academia that attempted to call the colored, American Negro, "Afro-American," until James Brown, put his foot down, and wrote a song entitled: "I'm Black and I'm Proud".
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0A_N-wmiMo

Now that brother James be a roll'n over in his grave, Whitey be com'n up with some 'nother name to be calling blacks: "African American". I wonder what blacks are called in Canada and Nigeria?
30
Dina, I think you missed the secondary point that weste1184 slipped in there. He wasn't talking about gays being equal or not being equal with racial minorities, he was talking about bf'n as being on par with alien abductions.

Please wait...
