Well crafted rant, excellent use of vocabulary, insightful social commentary as well.
You had me right up to the point of your sweeping generalization/biting insult.
Cowards??? What exactly do you think they're afraid of? Maybe, just maybe, they've come to the realization that 9 out of 10 conversations with random strangers are generally unpleasant and/or awkward experiences.
And if you spend a considerable time downtown, or in one of the more populated and trendy areas, you better believe that 9 out of 10 random strangers that start a conversation want something from you.
They're not cowards dude, they're just likely sick of being solicted at every step of their journey.
This is a bit crazy, but is it at all possible that the guy might just enjoy listening to music while he walks home/to the bus/wherever? I think that's the general idea behind dropping a few hundred dollars on a fancy music playing device.... I don't know, maybe you buy all of your technology as some weird display of misanthropy, but I do it because I derive enjoyment from my gadgets.

So go ahead and be brave for the rest us. Thanks.
"How dare you listen to music instead of stare silently in the elevator. TRAITOR!"
