I wouldn't hold your breath on any of "them" going away. Hating on what you can't control is a losing battle. You'll only make yourself miserable in the process. I know from experience. Be an activist, spread the word, change what you can, and make peace with the rest, or go elsewhere. There are other places to live out there, you know. We've all got them on our radar.
I think this kind of elitist attitude is more dangerous than it appears. People who feel truly entitled to a city, or any other public space, because they identify more strongly with the past than the present are the antithesis to progress and diversity.
Also, the notion that those individuals who appear to be part of mainstream culture (hipsters, tattoos, yuppies) are automatically not "real" because you have decided they are not authentic, is one of the most dangerous types of entitlement there is.
Nothing wrong with being nostalgic for a city's history, but that doesn't give you a right to claim others not like you don't belong here and should leave. Not to be melodramatic, IA, but your post is not "anti-capitalist" - it's the exact kind of attitude that leads to fascism, genocide, tribalism, nationalism, slavery, etc. In other words: grow up.
you tell 'em I,A! i'm so sick of all these techies and google glassholes taking over the mission with their google buses driving rent up to $3,000/month for a one bedroom, and all these real estate moguls evicting the elderly, disabled and poor that have lived in their homes for decades! not to mention all the art galleries that have been shut down to be turned into offices for app developers! gawd!
oh, sorry, that's san fancisco, a city that's soul is actually being sucked dry by an influx of shitty people.
Um ,Bort? That's the point...THIS is how what happened to San Francisco BEGAN.
No one is arguing against change, or the inevitability thereof. We're talking about specific changes that lead to cities catering to the wealthy at the expense of other people and values. Gentrification isn't a synonym for progress
Hey, I can guarantee chatting online about it is really changing things....
When the outlet for change is the source of the trouble... looks like we should start our own blog and REALLY make headway hahaha
P.s. tribes aren't bad, its separatism that's the problem. Class, race, creed, image and otherwise.
Wow, Portland must have been really SWELL back in the day! Having lived here only since 1991 (and having visited periodically since only 1981) I assume it all got ruined prior to those dates.
Damn it! I missed the no traffic, no douchbags, no trend-followers, no capitalism, no consumerism, no vandalism PARADISE that was the REAL Portland!
You're right. This place just SUCKS now. So when are you moving?

Not everyone, anyway.
That post was SO off the mark.
That really escalated quickly.
