Project Pabst: the hottest, dustiest music festival where it's impossible to actually get drunk. I’ve always managed to have a blast, and this year was no different. Highlights from Saturday included the incomparable Lizzo wearing a satin robe and no pants while singing the loop from “Let 'Em Say” a cappella, Father John Misty’s extended lounge introduction in which he sat down onstage and announced, “I like to think Iggy Pop is out there somewhere thinking, ‘What the fuck happened to music?’” and Iggy Pop himself taking the stage with “I Wanna Be Your Dog,” middle fingers blazing and his weird, leathery skin flapping in the summer breeze. Despite all the legendary talent at Project Pabst this year, the best thing I saw over the weekend was a set by singer/rapper Lizzo. Accompanied by two fierce, leotard-clad and hair-whipping backup dancers (the “Big Girls”) and a DJ that doubles as an emcee, Lizzo slayed her performances of songs off her 2016 EP Coconut Oil. She even sang some new stuff, like the single “Water Me,” and took a request from an audience member who wanted to hear “Let ‘Em Say.” I stood close to the stage and sang every word to self-love anthems like “Scuse Me,” “Coconut Oil,” “Good As Hell,” and “En Love,” but I was disappointed that not enough of the audience knew the words when she’d ask for call-and-response. Still, Lizzo interacted with the audience and talked about how much she loves Portland, mentioning that last time she and her all-girl tour came to town they got in a fight at a strip club! I was delighted to hear she’s got a new full-length on the way, and will be returning to Portland for a tour date in November. After her set I was relieved to hear several audience members buzzing and raving about how they’re newly in love with Lizzo after seeing her moments earlier. It’s good to see first-hand that her powerhouse voice and message of self-love, self-care, and self-actualization are reaching new fans every time she visits. JENNI MOORE
