On Saturday night, at least a dozen Portland police officers pursued a suspected carjacker into a Southeast homeless shelter, and according to what we know now, shot the man to death after he pulled a knife. According to one witness that the Mercury interviewed, the deceased appeared to be in mental distress, and was attempting to stab himself in the neck.

“The guy was begging for help, he was suicidal,” he said. “They could have Tased him, taken to get some help. They didn’t need to shoot him.”

A man has identified the shooting victim as his brother, and also has many questions about how police reacted during the incident.
