Beer is good for a lot of things (just ask Gwyneth Paltrow, who is rumored to have drank a Guinness every day of her pregnancy). All Goop-iness aside, we're a beer-drenched city and a do-good-loving city, so it's a little surprising the two don't go together quite as often as you'd suppose.
Not the case with Brews for New Avenues. Purported to be the largest beer auction in the world, it's also the world's largest craft beer fundraiser. Be sure to read the thorough report Dustin Guy wrote for the Mercury last year, examining and explaining the annual event, which auctions off unfathomably rare bottles of beer for New Avenues for Youth, a nonprofit working to help homeless young people.
This year's Brews for New Avenues takes place Saturday, August 25 at the Leftbank Annex, and the organizers have revealed a few of the high-profile packages being live-auctioned this time. They include special treats from some of the most highly esteemed breweries in the world, including Gueuzerie Tilquin, Bokkereyder, Cantillon, and 3 Fonteinen. While the VIP event sold out in a matter of minutes, regular tickets are currently available for $15 on the Brews for New Avenues website. Isn't it time your beer drinking helped someone other than yourself?
And hey, I'm sorry I brought up Gwyneth Paltrow.
