News of talented people finding love shouldn't necessarily be shocking to receive, but nonetheless, today's revelation that Anacortes musician Phil Elverum and film actor Michelle Williams were not only acquainted, but indeed married, and to each other, has left fans of Elverum's music utterly gobsmacked.

The primary reason for this is probably the degree to which bereavement has dominated the public perception of both the bride and the groom. In Williams's case, it was the death of actor Heath Ledger, with whom she had a daughter. For Elverum, it was the death of his wife, artist and musician Geneviève Castrée in 2016. The last two Mount Eerie albums—A Crow Looked at Me (2017) and this year's Now Only—are suffused with Castrée's absence, in such a way that even listening to them feels like trespassing. As does writing about the private lives of strangers, so... congratulations to the happy couple!
