Three times today, according to CNN, President Trump refused to say anything when asked about the death of Senator John McCain:

Given several opportunities, President Donald Trump ignored questions about the passing of Sen. John McCain and the legacy he left behind.

Veterans, reports HuffPo, were outraged:

AMVETS, one of the country’s largest veterans organizations, blasted President Donald Trump on Monday over his lackluster response to the recent death of Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.).

The White House flag was nevertheless flying at full staff, per the NYT:

As many flags around the nation remained at half-staff on Monday to mourn Senator John McCain, a Republican who had survived a Vietnam War prison camp and weathered the gradual coarsening of politics within his own party, the American flag flew at full-staff over the White House.

Then, after widespread condemnation, the White House returned the flag to half-staff, according to The Washington Post:

President Trump on Monday ordered the American flag to be flown at half-staff this week in honor of Sen. John McCain after intense criticism of his response to the Arizona Republican’s death.

The announcement came after the flag atop the White House was raised to full-staff earlier in the day.

Also, says WaPo, Trump won't attend McCain's funeral:

“The president will not be, as far as we know, attending the funeral. That’s just a fact,” [Rick Davis, a McCain family spokesman] said, declining to reiterate what has already been reported about the McCain family’s wishes.

John McCain's "final words," as reported by NBC News, criticize Trump:

Sen. John McCain, who passed away Saturday from brain cancer, penned a farewell message before he died that appears to take thinly veiled shots at President Donald Trump for fanning the flames of "tribal rivalries" and hiding "behind walls."

In a fiery letter that's now in the hands of the Associated Press, the federal official overseeing student loans resigned:

The top government official overseeing the $1.5 trillion student loan market resigned Monday, citing what he says is the White House’s open hostility toward protecting the nation’s millions of student loan borrowers.

Seth Frotman will be stepping down from his position as student loan ombudsman at the end of the week, according to his resignation letter which was obtained by The Associated Press. He held that position since 2016... “The damage you have done to the Bureau betrays these families and sacrifices the financial futures of millions of Americans in communities across the country,” Frotman said.

It's the 584th day of Donald Trump's presidency, and it seems he spent most of it responding to the death of a long-serving US elected official in pretty much the same way as Russia Today's editor.
