The death of the man who died on Thanksgiving Day while in police custody was the result of a drug overdose, according to the Multnomah County Medical Examiner.

Portland State University (PSU) campus officers found Richard Barry, 52, yelling and running in the street near SW 6th and SW Mill on November 22. After a brief struggle, the PSU officers—eventually joined by Portland police officers—detained Barry and took him to a Portland hospital.

According to the medical examiner's office, Barry died from overdosing on a blend of methamphetamines and cocaine. In a press release sent by Multnomah County, spokesperson Kate Wilson says the death was "ruled an accident," and not related to officer involvement.
