TRIMET

Good morning, Portland! Alas, August has almost left—but it's gifting us some lovely weather on its way out the door.

Here are the headlines.

Finding Fault: Both TriMet and the Portland Police Bureau (PPB) are claiming no fault in the fatal stabbings of two men on a MAX train in 2017. The agencies argue that Jeremey Christian, the man accused of the stabbings, is solely responsible for the deaths. But the victims' families are suing TriMet and PPB for a total of $20 million, arguing that there were opportunities for TriMet and PPB to intervene before the stabbings ever happened—including just the day before, when Christian harassed a Black woman on another MAX train.

Strike: Workers at Oregon and Southwest Washington Fred Meyer, QFC, Safeway, and Albertsons locations plan to strike soon if their union cannot reach a satisfying deal during contract negotiations. Those negotiations have been happening for over a year now, with wage increases being one of the biggest points of contention.

Walsh Wades In: Joe Walsh, a former conservative congressman who was big into the Tea Party movement and conspiracy theories about Barack Obama's birth certificate, is running against Donald Trump in the Republican primaries. Variety: It's the spice of life!

G7 Gaffes: G7, an annual meeting of top world leaders and Donald Trump, is happening this week. So far, some of the adults in the room have agreed to fund efforts to fight the Amazon fires, and Trump has said a bunch of stupid stuff.

All Quiet on the Iron Front: The Timbers Army was quieter than it's ever been during Friday night's match against the Seattle Sounders. The soccer fans were protesting the Timbers' front office's recent decision to ban the anti-fascist "iron front" symbol, and according to Mercury Timbers correspondent Abe Asher, it was "a long time in the making."
