Hey Portland, itâs going to get hot this weekâhereâs a list of cooling resources to share amongst your neighbors. Letâs get into the headlines!
In local news:
â˘Â With COVID-19 cases spiking across the state, Governor Brown is planning to announce a new indoor mask mandate tomorrow. Multnomah County leaders already announced their own mask mandate that will go into effect Friday and be enforced with fines up to $1,000.
â˘Â Portland tourist destination Screen Door opened a second location in the Pearl, and Janey Wong has all the deets on their dinner service! Spoiler alert: Their brunch still reigns supreme, but if youâre not interested in waiting over an hour for your weekend meal, dinner will do the trick.

â˘Â This weekâs heatwave will put Oregon Occupational Safety and Health Administrationâs new excessive heat rules to the test. The rules were put in place following Juneâs historic heatwave that killed 96 people across the state and led to at least four heat-related deaths on the job. The rules are intended to protect outdoor laborers, particularly farm workers, by requiring employees to provide shade and cool water when temperatures past 80 degrees.

In national news:
â˘Â New York Governor Andrew Cuomo resigned today in the wake of an investigation that found he sexually harassed 11 women. In a not-surprising-but-still-super-yucky move, Cuomo spent most of his resignation announcement talking about his successes as a Governor and also used the classic âas a father of daughtersâ excuse. My heart goes out to his daughters who have to reckon with the fact that their parentâthe person who is supposed to protect them and help guide their morals and valuesâdoes not respect women on the most basic and fundamental level.
â˘Â In a rare bipartisan moment, Bidenâs $1 trillion infrastructure bill was approved by the Senate today. The bill delivers a cornerstone of Bidenâs agenda to âbuild back betterâ from the pandemic and was approved with a 69-30 vote (nice).
