Multnomah County will open three severe weather shelters in Portland Tuesday night as overnight forecasts predict significant chances of snow in the metro area.

The Salvation Army shelter in North Portland, Imago Dei shelter in Southeast Portland, and Sunrise Center in East Portland will open at 8 pm tonight and are expected to close at 8 am Wednesday. Pets are welcome at all three shelters and no one will be turned away. TriMet will not require fare for anyone traveling to or from a warming shelter starting at 6 pm on April 12 until 10 am on April 13. Anyone requiring transportation to a warming shelter can call 2-1-1 to arrange a free ride.

The county did not open warming shelters Sunday night despite the unusual snowfall because early forecasts did not indicate that severe weather conditions would be met, according to a county spokesperson. As the chances of snow became clearer on Sunday, the Joint Office of Homeless Services—a collaboration between the city and county that coordinates severe weather shelters—did not have enough time to set up the shelters before the snow arrived. Portland leaders called for a review of the county’s severe weather conditions on Monday.
