Peter Craig
Publisher's Weekly describes Craig's new book Blood Father as "a rollicking if formulaic tale of a father coming to terms with his past and a daughter confronting her demons as they go on the lam from a Tijuana drug cartel." Powell's Books on Hawthorne , 3723 SE Hawthorne Blvd, 238-1668, 7:30 pm

Kill Bill: An Unofficial Casebook
The trail of film knowledge, hidden references, and influences that leads to Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill films is so long and winding, local buff D.K. Holm has written an entire annotated guide to help you down it. He'll show clips from the movies and read from the book tonight. Powell's City of Books , 1005 W Burnside St., 228-4651, 7:30 pm

Dean Karnazes
Karnazes has run 135 miles across Death Valley in 130-mile heat. Why one would ever submit themselves to such an endeavor is perhaps answered in his new memoir Ultramarathon Man. Powell's City of Books , 1005 W Burnside St., 228-4651, 7:30 pm

Phillip Margolin
In Margolin's latest, Lost Lake, Carl Rice, having undergone several identity switches since he murdered a Congressman in the 1980s, has lived a life of anonymity and eluded capture in our very own Portland for the past 20 years. Not until he roughs up a police officer (in self-defense) and is spotted on national news by his high school girlfriend (who aids his escape) does he have to locate evidence to clear him from the prior crime. For readers in search of a book of substance, Lost Lake ain't it. Margolin is very weak on dialogue and leaves nothing to the reader's imagination. WG Powell's in Beaverton , 8725 SW Cascade Ave, 643-3131, 7 pm

Jane Holtz Kay
Continuing the Illahee group's urban-themed lecture series, it's Holtz Kay, renowned architecture critic and author of the great anti-car book Asphalt Nation. First Congregational Church , 1126 SW Park Ave, 227-2719, 7:30 pm, $15
