Michael Finkel
In 2001, before Jayson Blair and Stephen Glass were even a blip on the radar, Finkel was fired from the New York Times for fabricating portions of an article about the chocolate industry in Africa. But unlike those two hacks, Finkel found his newly unemployed self in the strangest situation imaginable: multiple murderer Christian Longo started assuming his identity while on the run. Yes, you read that correctly: Longo pretended HE was Finkel. The two thus started a correspondence as the writer struggled to figure out what the hell was going on. Read all about it in Finkel's new book True Story. It's fucking fascinating. Finkel also appears at the Jantzen Beach Barnes and Noble, 1720 N Jantzen Beach, Monday June 13, 6:30 pm.
