The Death of Satire

Agreed. I couldn't believe how many simpletons there were making angry comments. Morons.

Good job Courtenay, both on this piece and the original. While I was one of the ones that "got it" (although I did have a little WTF moment, it quickly became clear to me that it was sarcastic), I was shocked to see the overwhelming response of people for whom it went straight over their heads. You were very funny while you made some deep comments on how dangerously distracted our society has become while trying to block out the horrible realities we face using the modern technology of the smartphone. It was good comedy --and even better commentary -- though perhaps in the future you'll have to be even more extreme so as not to scare the shit out of the soccer mom community. And, in your response to that outcry, you fairly addressed the even deeper problem of a society that has become so desperately jaded by the ugly truth that they can't even take a joke anymore.

Keep up the good work. You (and the Merc) can count me as a fan.

Sorry no one got your piece, but as we all know "satire" is an insidious tool of the patriarchy to pretend to poke fun at itself while actually retaining its power, all the while distracting oppressed people from their plight and the means to alleviate it. If you hadn't allowed yourself to be mansplained into this, Courtenay, you would understand that your bourgeois privileged humor is rooted in an utter lack of concern for the wage slaves who made your phone in other countries we aren't yet bombing, not to mention the traffic safety of myriad child-free cyclists lowering their carbon footprint, or, tire print, as it were, here in the Rose City, which, if we were really woke, would become ROSE City as in it's time WE ROSE UP AND TOOK BACK THIS COUNTRY FROM ... FROM ... any way, try fart jokes next time, everyone likes a good ending ...

@Mr. Greener. Courtenay doesn't "allow herself to get mansplained into" jack shit. both her last columns were insightful and intelligent commentary on the result of our addiction to phones and current collective psyche.

The only one mansplaining is you: calling her names, accusing her of having an "utter lack of concern", and ending your dribbling rant with a fart joke. You qualify your superiority by announcing that you are "kid free" and drive a bicycle. Translation: no car and no family skills.

Nice.

@Aurelius141 Thank you for proving Courtenay's point as well as The Importance of Being Earnest. Born to be Wilde indeed! Let me guess, you were one of the people who thought "Spinal Tap" should have won Best Documentary at the Oscars?

Please wait...
