Going to comics fest Linework NW this weekend? Here are two participating artists not to miss.

Sophie Franz is a wonderful Portland artist working in mixed media, photorealistic painting, and cartooning. After seeing her short pieces in collections published by Study Group Comics and Gridlords, I have been hotly anticipating getting a full story from her this spring. A dream-like, mysterious yarn about three scientists marooned or stationed (they can’t remember) in a floating home, The Experts was just published by Box Brown’s DC-based Retrofit Comics.

Texturally-focused illustrator and comics artist Lindsay Anne Watson is a new and a welcome addition to Portland’s society of illustrators and self publishers. Her latest, I Don't Need Eyes, published by Berkeley/LA collective Tiny Splendor, collects a series of single-panel comics about duality, support, and honesty. Two lone partners (Romantic? Possibly but not necessarily) explore a lonely nighttime realm. Watson’s work resonates on an emotional level. Her full-page scenes and simple dialogue are easy to find yourself in.

Watson and Franz will both be signing their books at Floating World Linework Pre-Party Extravaganza Friday night from 5-8 pm at Floating World Comics (400 NW Couch), and tabling Saturday at Linework NW at Norse Hall (111 NE 11th). The festival starts at noon and goes through Sunday.
