In a first for Multnomah County, Dane Reister—the Portland officer who mistakenly loaded his beanbag shotgun with live ammo and then shot a man this summer—has been indicted on a pair of felony assault charges by a criminal grand jury, the district attorney's office announced last night.

The charges are "reckless assault in the third degree and assault in the fourth degree by causing physical injury with criminal negligence by a deadly weapon." The DA's office announced it will separately file a charge of negligent wounding.

The police bureau, at the end of a rough day for Chief Mike Reese, issued a brief statement.

This evening, Friday, November 18, 2011 at 6:45 p.m. the Portland Police Bureau learned that Officer Dane Reister has been indicted by a Multnomah County Grand Jury for Assault in the Fourth Degree and Assault in the Third Degree for his actions in the June 30th shooting of William Kyle Monroe. Officer Reister has been on administrative leave since the incident occurred.

We continue to hope for Mr. Monroe's full recovery and we recognize that this incident has been extremely difficult for everyone involved.

The DA's office says it's adding the negligent wounding charge even though a judge earlier this year ruled the grand jury couldn't consider it, saying it's not applicable to cops, just hunters and others.

As the Oregonian previously reported, the bureau has dramatically changed its ammo-handling procedures to avoid this kind of mistake—an accident waiting to happen, experts even told the Mercury after the shooting happened. The Oregonian has an incredibly in-depth writeup of the whole case up this morning. Check it out.
