Any beer crawl that starts at the Horse Brass Pub is bound to be triumphant. The gold standard of Portland beer bars, the Horse Brass has operated its dark cavern of a pub since 1976. The beer list is long and impressive, offering rarely seen British beers, hard-to-find sours, and an IPA for all. Keeping with their Anglophile approach, the menu has pot pies, bangers and mash, and a Scotch egg that arrives cut like a deep-fried meat flower. The Hawthorne Hophouse (along with its sister establishment, the 15th Avenue Hophouse in Northeast Portland) is one of the biggest cheerleaders for Oregon’s craft beer scene. With 24 rotating beers, ciders, and meads to choose from, it’s the place to try the next big thing before it blows up. God bless the dive bar with a good draft list and really cheap prices. All of Angelo’s pints are $4, with a couple of options always on special for $3. It’s not fancy, but you’re here to drink, and to play some pinball, air hockey, or Big Buck Hunter while ya do it. Last year, owner Angelo Markantonatos opened Kouzina in the restaurant space next door, so you’re in for a tasty, cheap gyro to sop up all that booze, too. The new Lot @ Scout Beer is one of my happy places. With a relatively short, but well-curated tap list and tons of outdoor seating, it’s the perfect spot on a sunny day. Resurrected from the closed Tidbit food pod on Southeast Division, there’s a handful of surrounding carts so you can pair your pint with a waffle sandwich from Smaaken or that bomb taco salad from Garden Monsters. Grab a bar seat overlooking Division and people watch, or get some work done on the wifi—either way, you’re in for a nice little afternoon.
