Matt Genz
From the Portland International Film Festival (PIFF) PIFF selects the best in international film, and you have until Sunday to take advantage. Plus, check out Matt's foreign recommendations:
• Holy Mountain (1973, Chile): "A film about a thief who looks like Jesus, and joins a cult of 'thieves' to follow an alchemist to find immortality."
• In the Mood For Love (2000, Hong Kong): "About a man and a woman who live in the same apartment building and find out their spouses are cheating on them, with each other."
• Talk to Her (2002, Spain): "Beautifully shot and full of loneliness, love, bullfighters, sex, strange friendships, and perversion."
• 400 Blows (1959, France): "An amazing film about troubled adolescence and based on the director's childhood."
• The Devil's Backbone (2001, Mexico): Very scary and very well done horror film about a haunted orphanage."
Rolf Semprebon
From Rolf's Tax Service Inc. Don't get stuck in the last minute tax crunch stress this year--do it now. Cool tax dude Rolf, a former Mercury writer and KBOO DJ, offers some advice:
• DON'T Fall For It: "Those refund loans, where you get the refund in one day--don't do that. It's a waste of money."
• DO Front: "If you owe money and don't have it, mail the tax return in anyway-- the penalties for not filing or filing late are a lot more than for paying late."
• DO Credit Political Contributions: "If you give up to $50, make sure you take that off your state taxes."
• DON'T Forget the Multnomah County Tax: "It doesn't go to bombing and torturing Muslims, it's for good causes and it's usually not that much."
• DO Use Modern Technology: "There's tax prep software online, where you can actually prepare your taxes on the computer (www.irs.gov)."
