Day One - SXSW 2010
Total Number of Bands Seen:
Six. Those Darlins, Toro y Moi, Okkervil River & Roky Erickson, Vadoinmessico, Rose Elinor Dougall, and High on Fire.
Total Number of Tacos Consumed:
Three. Including an unfortunately named "Dirty Sanchez" taco from Torchy's. I felt ashamed ordering it.
Notable Shows That I Was Unable to See:
Plenty. I couldn't get into Broken Bells, Billy Bragg, or Hunx and His Punx. Plus, due to some scheduling confusion, I missed both jj and Best Coast.
Overall Drunkeness (on an Aaron Meshian scale of 0-100)
71 (OMG, the same score as Remember Me). Too drunk too drive, yet not drunk enough to eat an unnecessary slice of pizza on the walk back to the hotel room.
Overall, the first day of SXSW was a bit of a wash. There were far too many shows over capacity, far too little sleep (thanks to a 4:30am wakeup call in order to make it PDX on time), and far too much depression over the passing of Alex Chilton (who was supposed to play here on Saturday night).
The weakest day of the SXSW schedule, Wednesday offered a solid collection of day shows (Okkervil and Erickson was a nice treat, although it was odd to see the band more or less babysit the former 13th Floor Elevators frontman from the stage), yet the schedule could not compare to what is slated for the next few days. Oddly enough, the blistering set from High on Fire might have been the highlight of my night. My earplugs were no match for their merciless level of volume, and the High on Fire performance left me with a lingering tinnitus hum that I'll still be hearing this time tomorrow.
