A new recording from Portland's new reyes de fiesta found its way into the Mercury mailbox and methinks the sun is coming out again. O Bruxo have, in a very short time, stepped up to fill the void and become Portland's must see, must dance-to party band. They've been slaying set after raucous set—full of Latin rhythms and influences joyously amped up with experimental fervor—at house shows and clubs around town, bringing fun, mucho sabor, and some desperately needed heat along with them.

The first peek at their new recordings, Papa Gallo, starts as cool drink of cumbia, highlife and soca. Thankfully, their take on world music sounds much more legit—they do have the credibility of sharing members with Evolutionary Jass Band, Gulls and Paper/Upper/Cuts—than your average Western take. After few minutes, the beat drops out and the guitars pluck out their new, polyrhythmic agendas before the bass and drums jump back in—a sweeping change reminiscent of American Don-era Don Caballero.

O Bruxo have all the makings of and potential to be Portland's Official Band of Summer 2010™, but there's one little raincloud hanging over that plan—from the band's email:

Guitarist Jesse Johnson is about to have a baby. As such, we've only a few shows remaining, then we break until October.

You heard him, folks, stream the mp3 below and check out the dates for your last chance to see them while the sun is out.
