Swedish rapper Yung Lean’s oozy, warped beats and Auto-Tuned vocals evoke an anxious comfort, like getting sleep paralysis, freaking out for a second, and then resigning to ride the wave of a waking dream. On 2017’s Stranger, Lean proves he’s more than a sad boy meme. The production is accented with lush keyboards, and his lyrics imagine a world that, while dreary and filled with heartbreak, is also full of friends and beautiful vistas in the distance (“Red Bottom Sky” and “Agony”).
