The internet is bad, but Daniel Mallory Ortberg is good. The co-editor of beloved now-defunct site the Toast and author of 2014’s Texts from Jane Eyre, Ortberg also serves as Slate’s Dear Prudence, and brightens Twitter with hyperliterate jokes about everything from coming out as trans to hypothetical crossovers between Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca. Ortberg’s latest book, The Merry Spinster: Tales of Everyday Horror promises to carry on the proud tradition of the Toast column “Children’s Stories Made Horrific”.
