At any given time, Portland’s jam-packed with book readings—but if you ask me, the best ones of the whole year are part of Tin House’s Summer Workshop Series. During the day, students hone their craft, but come nightfall, the workshops’ big-deal faculty members come out for the (free!) Tin House Summer Reading Series. This week you can see Catherine Lacey, Danez Smith, Melissa Febos, Alexander Chee, and more—including my personal favorite, Wells Tower, whose striking work has appeared in McSweeney’s, Harper’s, the Paris Review, and his phenomenal short story collection Everything Ravaged, Everything Burned. Take advantage of the long summer nights and warm weather, head out to Reed, and discover your new favorite author.
