some pizza tastes better eaten cold 3 days after you buy it. wash it down with a flat soda, watching infomercials at 3am...oh yeah. little slice o' heaven. i'm thinking of opening a restaurant that fills this niche.
As a New Yorker, I can confidently say that I am So. Fscking. Tired. of NYers acting like we have some inborn authority about what constitutes good pizza. No. Most of the pizza in NY is crap. Greasy, underbaked, sloppy crap. OK, maybe we don't have a Pizza Hut on every block, but Papa John's thrives in NY. That one fact all by itself is enough to discredit NY's taste in pizza.
Also, Blackbird is OK (and very inconsistent), but if you want to try and approximate the NY slice, Lonesome's is far closer. They even sell it to you through a hole in the door, complete with all the faux NY attitude you can stand.
Hot Lips pepperoni with chipotle sauce. Get it by the slice for that extra heat in the oven to crisp up the crust a bit. 3 pepperoncini on the side. This is my pizza perfection.
*crickets*
Guess that was before your time...
I'm talking about regular pizza by the slice, not fancy Pizza like Apizza Scholls, etc, which is basically a different food entirely.
Also, there's only one criteria by which a "regular" pizza place should be judged: The Plain Cheese Slice.
Toppings are great, don't get me wrong, but they aren't what makes great pizza. Great pizza is made by dough, sauce, and cheese.
