Icons Among Us: Jazz in the Present Tense described above as a "polite defense of an outmoded genre" I think not! I happen to know from first hand experience with the film that when fresh avant-garde artists call out established masters by saying "f.... so and so and f.... so and so" that probably does not fall under the description of politeness. Not to mention up and coming and insanely hip musicians challenging narrowly defined traditional boundaries with absolute intensity and street-wise verve. Come on now, does the writer believe that an art form centered around improvisation and spontaneity i.e. being in the moment can be be defined in such a narrow way? Come see for yourself why this film puts you in the NOW better than any other doc. around. Music aficionados, documentary film enthusiasts and those interested in the origins of creativity need apply!

I have to agree with "jahluv" about Icons Among Us. If you think cats like the DaKAH Hip Hop Orchestra, Garage a Trois (with Skerik & Mike Dillon (Critters Buggin' anyone?), Marco Benevento (Duo, etc.) & Stanton Moore of Galactic), and Bugge Wesseltoft are "outmoded" you've got your ears in you A--HOLE! Open up and check out what's happening and stop negatively reviewing things you haven't heard or seen. The film screened to a sold-out audience at the Seattle International Film Festival and that crowd certainly didn't seen to feel it was irrelevant. Quite the contrary -- it was rocking! Check it out for yourselves on 1/31.

Please wait...
