1. "Mayan" is a linguistic term, "Maya" refers to the people.
2. The Maya were absolutely nowhere near the first people living on the Yucatán, they were predated by about *8000 years of human occupation*.
3. They Maya actually aren't that well known for "abundant sacrificial rituals", you're probably thinking of the Aztecs.
4. The Maya ARE also well known for STILL BEING AROUND... there are around 7 MILLION living in Central America.
