I grew up on the East Coast and I love DiNicolas. Their red sauce rocks. And it is BLASPHEMY to criticize the antipasto tray that comes free with meals. You forgot to mention that all patrons must pause at the picture of Mom and Dad DiNicola. Their kids still run the restaurant.
Ah, if only Pietro's had survived. . .maybe wandering off Powell and encountering Estrellita's and Thanh Truc into the mix, and I for one could wallow in nostalgia all week.
Chunty, with the exception of the Taco Bell and BK on 50th, everything east of Cesar Chavez is from within the past twenty years or so. Not exactly classic/old Portland. Nice try, though.
I'd like to add that the happy hour at the Original Taco House is incredible! I doubt the prices have changed since the 80's, and for us folks that grew up going there, it truly is fun to be in the bar area, that mystical place we could never go...
Although I get annoyed at how people still think anything east of 39th is the boonies, but in the context of the article, what longtime restaurants east of SE 34th still exist? Powell's Seafood?
Here's an East Portland restaurant for you, Saylers Old Country Kitchen. Unfortunately the giant rotating sign with the picture of the 72 ounce steak is gone -- replaced with a more conventional, Portland-friendly version. With that said, you should take your grandparents, I bet they'll be impressed.
Despite your blasphemy, good article...
Let me know when you find the guts to cross 39th. Or don't, actually, it's probably better that way.
Oooh, I just "rediscovered" McMenamins!
Why don't you do something productive beyond mindlessly insulting the writer and offer up a list of "classic" business beyond the realm of 39th?
Or did you just come over here to fully expose your inability to express a coherent thought instead?
C'mon, get those little hamsters running in the wheel that is your mind. I know you can do it! I believe in you!
Stay adorable.
Love,
Moi
