Madame Butterfly

425 SW Stark, 525-0033

Madame B. provides late-night eats which don't involve lots of frying. There are a number of standard sushi rolls available: California, Shrimp, Eel, and Spider. But the Kushikatsu is definitely the best item on the menu. Chicken, pork, and fish are breaded, fried to a light crisp, and served on a stick. A thick coat of sesame seeds covers the very outer layer, and all of the meat is fresh and juicy. The menu also features about ten innovative drinks, including the Icy Moon (frozen sake with peach nectar), all of which are delicate and balanced with sake and a variety of fruit juices. KD

Small World Cafe

722 N Sumner, 265-0024

Small World Café is a small, vegan-friendly café. Now, I know what you're saying: Vegan food is gross and tasteless. For the most part, I agree with you, but I swear to God that this café has figured out a way to make food that tastes amazing. Breakfast and lunch is available all day, and both menus offer an awesome selection of cheap, satisfying dishes. On the breakfast menu, a three-cheese omelet served with fried red potatoes and toast is $5, and a three-egg Black Forest ham and cheese omelet is $5.50. You may also create your own omelet or breakfast sandwich by selecting from the giant list of fresh vegetables and meats. KD

Portland City Grill

111 SW 5th, 30th Floor, 450-0030

Portland City Grill is undoubtedly the meatiest meat market in Portland. Expect dozens of pairs of fake breasts sheathed in every color of tight sweater, topped with perfectly made up faces, slickly coiffed hair, and an equal number of businessmen to ogle them. But that's not the only reason to go. Their late night menu, weeknights after 10, Sunday after 4, has a bunch of great items under $5. The burger is hand pattied, huge, and one of the best in town. The mussels are fresh, the seared tuna is amazing, and that's just the beginning. Choose from about 20 items (crab cakes, pot stickers, salads), get fancy full, and enjoy the fabulous view (of the city), for almost nothing. KS
